Thump.
Thump, thump.
All I could hear, the beating of my pulse in my ears. All I could see, the thick black cloud of nothing in front of me. All I could feel, the tight, all-consuming pain of rope biting into my skin, ripping, tearing through my flesh. All I could taste, the bitterness of copper, of blood. My blood.
My senses were overwhelmed with the episodes of beatings, lashings, whippings. I couldn't tell if I was getting strong enough to take it, or if I was becoming too weak to react to it anymore. The latter terrified me.
I struggled to breathe. It had become more of a chore, and daily now, I had to sit and remind myself. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, out...
Where were we? Where was I?
I couldn't remember what day it was, how long I'd been here, when my love was coming to rescue me. I could barely comprehend that there was a time that I had fought back, tried to run, tried to escape. All I knew was the soreness in my hunched back, the heartbeat in my swollen leg. The wound, infected and oozing from the bullet. They never took out the bullet.
Once in a while, I heard their voices. I cowered from them, even when they never entered the room they held me in. I sat at a crooked angle, in the furthest corner of the square room. This wasn't my old apartment anymore. This was a new room. A smaller room. It smelled of manure, and blood, and the air stung my eyes. It smelled of cigarettes and burnt clothes. I had no idea where I was, where they had taken me. All I remembered was that day.
The day I almost got away.

"PRESTON! PRESTON, PLEASE, DON'T LET THEM TAKE ME! PRESTON!" It took all of my energy to be able to scream through my sobs. My leg was on fire, my vision blurred by tears, but I could see him clearly, the pain in his eyes, the shock on his face. Jody carried me over his shoulder to the chopper, and I could only stare in horror as I was dragged away from the man I loved, yet again.
I heard Preston shout something at us as I was lifted back into the helicopter, and saw the fury in his expression, but I couldn't understand what it was he had said. Dahlia seemed to get it, because she began to laugh quite loudly as the door to the winged beast was slammed shut behind us.
I began to hyperventilate, unable to control my breathing. Dahlia was still cackling like a fucking witch, and my anger began to replace my terror.
"YOU BITCH!" I wailed, suddenly lurching out of Jody's grasp and hurling myself at this woman I used to believe was my closest friend. I gave enough force to my charge, that I managed to slam her against the floor of the chopper, just as she had been trying to clip her buckle across her body.
