ALEXANDER
~*~*~
The light shining through the windows was what woke me up, practically dragging me into existence. I sat up and rubbed my eyes, groaning as the full effect of not sleeping for three days straight truly hit me.
I allowed my eyes to adjust to the brightness, wondering why the hell my blinds weren't shut.
Then everything from last night came rushing back. The files, the command to sleep, Preston taking me to my room. Carrying me. A jolt of panic raced down my spine and I shot out of bed, nearly tumbling to the ground as the sheets tangled around my legs. Without caring to check my state of appearance, I hurried from the room, making my way down the stairs.
As I rushed into the kitchen, gazing around frantically, I caught sight of Preston sitting leisurely at the kitchen counter, holding the morning newspaper between his large hands.
"Are you insane?!" I hissed in greeting as I approached him. It was clear he wasn't expecting company this early, because he jumped and whirled his head in my direction, grey eyes narrowed with alarm. Upon seeing who it was, he visibly relaxed and gave me an amused once over with his stormy gaze.
"What are you talking about, Lex?"
As if he didn't know! "You carried me to my room last night! You could have hurt yourself, you big oaf!"
A deep chuckle resonated from the man's throat, and he shook his head at me, turning back to look at his newspaper. "Lex, I made sure there was enough light that I could see where I was going. You were just too exhausted to realize the hall light was on. I'm not completely helpless. Besides, I explained to you when we first met that with the right amount of light, I can see just enough to move around without injuring myself."
I opened my mouth to protest, ready to stick him with a nasty comeback, but I had no argument, and deflated in surrender. Walking up behind him, I glanced over his shoulder at what he was reading. To my surprise, it was an article about Eddington Inc. Something having to do with how the money the company was producing was being stolen. An inside job, a traitor among the employees. Maybe that was why Sara and Ron had gone on that 'business trip'. They were probably trying to find answers on who it might be.
"An insider, stealing company funds?"
I didn't pay much attention to him as he turned to answer my question. But no reply came. A little confused, I glanced at him and caught him staring. When his eyes met mine, they were wide and dilated with an unreadable glint. Preston swallowed hard and rubbed the back of his neck, a sudden shade of pink flushing his cheeks. "Alex, did you march down here the second you woke up?" he asked innocently, fighting a growing smirk that tugged at the corners of his mouth.
I rose an eyebrow at him, "Yeah, why? Is something wrong?"
