Enjoy!!! (sorry if it is horrible) Chapter 23

"Mom?" I called when I walked in to the waiting room of the hospital.

"Oh, Avery!" She cried running over to me with tears streaming down her face.

"How is he?" I asked, afraid of the answer. My mom sniffed as she tried to get a hold of herself so she could fill me in.

"It's not good." She whispered. "The drunk driver ran a red light and plowed right into him. He broke his arm in three places and he has swelling on his brain. The doctors put him into an induced coma." She sobbed and Kayden put an arm around her.

"Hey, Avery." She smiled weakly at me. "Are the boys here?"

"No, they had to do a few concerts and then they are going to come for a few days." She nodded at me. "Can I go see him?"

"Yeah, he's just in there." She pointed at the door we were standing in front of. I nodded and went through the door.

A gasp escaped my lips when I looked at my brother. My once pretty well built brother looked dwarfed in the bed with all the machines and tubes. His skin was pale and translucent looking. His left arm was casted from his thumb to just below where his shoulder started. I sat down next to him and took his limp right hand in my own. I blinked away my blurry vision.

"Please wake up Dustin. I promise that if you wake up I will never stop eating again. Please, please wake up." My voice cracked and tears ran down my face.

I sat there with my brother for a little while longer until the doctor came in to check him out.

Over the next few days there was some progress with Dustin's condition. His brain swelling went down and he was breathing on his own. We were just waiting for him to wake up. The drunk driver only ended up having some bruised ribs. He was currently in jail since his mom refused to post bail. She said she would not pay because Dustin almost died. His mom was slightly a scary woman.

I had been passing the time by catching up with Gracelynn, Aimee, and Gina. They had been filling me in on all the latest gossip at school; there was an awful lot of it. Apparently there was a rumor going around that Tracey had some sort of STD and Parker dumped her faster than a germophobe dropping a public phone. She was still popular though, and apparently a whole lot meaner. I'm glad I am still not there.

Today the boys were coming for a visit and I was currently at the mall with my girls. We were leaving Forever 21 when I heard a voice I had never wanted to hear again.

"Look Patricia, she's back." I groaned and stopped walking. My friends looked at me and I smiled. I was tired of being a doormat. I turned around.

"Hey,Tracey! So nice to see you!" I pulled out my biggest, fakest smile for her.

"Aw, did the fat cow get dumped by her little celebrity boyfriend? Have fun with your five minutes of fame? Did he realize that you were worthless and fat?" Her words cut me and I almost lost my nerve until she said another sentence: "You know your brother deserved it right? I hope he does us all a favor and dies." I locked my jaw, brought by tightly clenched fist back, and punched her hard in the face. Pain exploded in my hand, but I ignored it and focused on Tracey now on the floor.

"You know what Tracey? You are just insecure and a plain old bitch. For some reason you chose me to be jealous of and made me feel worthless. Well you know what? You are the worthless one! You are just insecure and feel the need to make others feel bad about themselves so you feel better. Unfortunately for you, I am no longer going to be your doormat!" I felt a presence next to me, but ignored it like I was ignoring the pain in my hand. "And you, Patricia, are a horrible friend! How could you turn on your four best friends like we meant nothing? And to give that bitch my secrets that I trusted you with? You are a horrible person." With that I turned on my heel and walked away.

I didn't make it very far before noticing that I had an audience of five. Five boys to be exact, one of which was my boyfriend. I grinned sheepishly.

"Hey, guys." My voice was slightly higher than normal.

"Hey, Avery." Harry greeted. "We came to get you because your brother just woke up."

"He did?" I gasped. Harry nodded and put an arm around me. While we were walking to the parking lot he whispered in my ear: "I am really glad you stood up for yourself. That was hot." I grinned at him.

"Dustin!" I squealed, relived that he was awake.

"Hey." He grinned. I gave him a hug as best I could while avoiding his injuries and tubes. "I heard you talking to me while I was asleep and I expect you to not stop eating ever again. You promised." I smiled at him.

"Don't worry. I won't. I promise." I would do my best to keep my promise too. I knew I would have some rough patches, but I had a lot of people who cared and I knew they would help me. Standing up for myself was probably the best thing I could have done. I was really grateful that Harry found me in the hallway at the concert. If he hadn't I would probably still be a doormat and I might even be dead. Hopefully not though. All I can say is: Thanks for Saving Me, 1D.
