Chapter 6

Now

“Mom,” I sighed. My mother was being exceptionally irritating today.

“Sweetheart. I’m just saying! You’re 26 now is the time you want to start having babies.” My mother exclaimed on the phone. “You should totally get back into the dating field and I know the perfect guy to set you up with…..” she just kept on talking. I wandered if she could ever shut her mouth. Buut she is my mother so the answer is no.

“Ma. Tell Daddy I love him and tell Joshua he can come over any time,” I liked when Joshua came over. We had so much fun together.

“Wait, sweetie!”

“No. Bye mom, I’ll see you at dinner!” I hung up quickly and sighed. The office telephone rang and I picked it up immediately, “Hello this is, Queen’s catering how may I help you?” I pulled up an order form on my computer.

I was on the phone because our receptionist, my best friend, Tiffany was at home sick. She’d be in 5 minutes. Or at least that was what she said 16 minutes ago.

“Luna!” Tiffany came from the elevator. “Thank you so much. Dave tried to convince me to stay home and take my fraternity leave but I was like….,” she set her bags down, “I’m only 3 months pregnant. Really?” she shook her head. Dave is Tiffany’s husband. In a way. They got married but the legal papers were lost in the process. To me they were married anyway.

“They’re looking for you in the kitchen,” She told me and put on her blue tooth and all her other cool receptionist gear.  Even pregnant Tiffany looked like a model. I hate to say that I envy my best friend but I do. She’s willowy and slim and looks good in anything she wears. She was our ad model too. Which should tell you just how beautiful she is.

“Why?” I asked. We all had separate kitchens and teams. I really didn’t need a team and Ms. Base, my boss, knew that. She’s the one who said that. So I just took interns.

“Well…word is they need help with this one cake they’re having troubles with.” Tiffany shook her head. “But I happen to have heard Kat say that she was going to get you to help her with idea’s and take all the credit.”

“Idea’s for the contest?” We had office wars. What company didn’t do that? But it wasn’t really wars, but contest Ms. Base put on so that we wouldn’t lose creativity with our creations.  “She must have lost her damn mind,” I snorted.

Tiffany nodded and held up a finger for me to be silent, meaning she was on the phone with someone important, “Mhm.  Yes. Okay.” She pressed the entire building intercom button and said in a perfect resptionist voice, “There will be a meeting in room A3 today at 5pm. All Universe employees are required to come, bring your contest dessert dishes with you please.” she repeated it a second time and then looked up at me once she was finished.

I raised an eyebrow, “What are we having a meeting for?”

“She didn’t tell me,” she responded with a shrug. “Just that Mr. Chen was coming.”

“Okay. Mr. Chen could mean absolutely anything…,” I paused, “Wait..what if it’s that dude who buys company’s and make them to his liking?”

Tiffany’s eyes widened, “Oh. That would be horrible. I like everything the way it is.”

I shook my head, “Tiffany. I should go get started on my cake. I only have 3 and a half hours.”

“Alright. Well bye.” She immediately got back on the phone, talking and tapping on her computer.

My cake was perfect. It was a simple cake. Nothing too elegant but not homemade looking either. Just simple. I walked to our meeting room with the cake on those rolley tray things. I never knew what they were called.

I still don’t.

When I opened the door to the meeting room I was not remotely surprised by my fellow employee’s cakes and other desserts. They were all extravagant looking. I shook my head. They would never learn would they?

I sat down and immediately she was on me.

“Wow…your cake is so..so plain,” Kat said. “It’s…nice?” she sounded like she had a nasally voice.

“Yes. It is nice,” I said.

“I just thought .. someone your size would now how to bake.” She replied.

The bitch. All because I didn’t have a body like hers she thought herself above me. Well she wasn’t.

“This meeting is for Universer employee’s not World employee’s.” I told her icily.

Kat frowned, her eyes icing immediately, “I help Shane with his cake,” she pointed to Shane our hottest cook and waved. He waved back enthusiastically.

I was about to say something about her sleeping with him to wiggle her way into the meeting room when Ms. Base entered.

“Hello!” Ms. Base seemed very happy today, “We’re having a guess today to taste your wonderful creations!”

“Who?” Kat asked out loud.

Ms. Base looked at her with confusion, “Kat you’re a World employee I’m gonna have to ask you to leave. Now.”

Kat huffed and got up trotting off.

“Now without anymore…..interruptions. I present to you all, Mr. Chen.” She pointed to the door in the back of the room. No one enters through that door because it’s easier to walk to the front one.

A man entered the room, “Hello, Universe employees. I look forward to tasting your…creations?” he looked Ms. Base way with amusement.

He almost didn’t taste mine though. I almost drooled on it. Why?

He was drop dead gorgeous.
