Tris POV
I lie there in bed and stare at the old rusty ceiling. "You know we should really make this place more modern." I say. "I know but they gave it to us for free Tris and we just moved in. Just give it a chance." Tobias turns over and faces me. We lie there for a few minutes staring at each other and smiling until little Mel runs into the room. "Mamie Mamie somwones at dwe dwoor!" She pulls herself onto the bed and hops into our arms. She's so cute with her little blond hair and big blue eyes. Tobias and I hug her and we sit there for a moment. "Did you make your bed little missy?" Tobias says in a playful voice. She looks down at her feet. "Nwo..." "You know what happens to little girls who don't make their bed?" "Nwo..." She says as she looks up at Tobias. "The tickle monster comes!" Tobias exclaims as he tickles Melanie. I laugh. She starts to laugh and giggle. "I'll go get the door." I say as Tobias continues to tickle Melanie.
I leave the room full of giggles and playful screams and head to the door of our new little apartment in the city. About a week ago all of the refugees at the camp relocated to the city of Wauwatosa and were assigned an apartment. Chris and Uri live down the hall and Evelyn lives across from us. Once I open the door Christina smiles and hugs me.
"Hey Chris." I say as I hug her back. "Come on in. We're still settling in but Mel is a little hyper bug right now." I laugh and so does Christina. "And where's my little angel?" Chris exclaims to get Melanie's attention. Melanie sprints into the living room and jumps in front of Christina. "Aunti Cwissy!!" Christina lifts her up into her arms and kisses her forehead. "So how are you settling in?" I ask. "Good, Uriah's moving some furniture around right now." She says as she sets Mel onto the floor. "That's good, you guys wanna stay for lunch I'm pretty sure there's some food here somewhere." The old fridge sits in the kitchen staring at me. "Okay I'll go get Uriah." "Aunti Cwissy!! I want to gwo wif wo to see untle Uwri!" Melanie continues to jump up and down in front of Christina. "Okay, okay!" She takes Mel's hand and walks out of the door.
I walk into the bedroom and plop myself on the bed. Mel's little teddy bear lies on the ground so I pick it up. "Where's the little bean?" Tobias says. "She went with Chris to get Uri, there coming over for lunch." I lie down next to Tobias and snuggle next to him. We kiss for a bit until the front door opens. "Mamie Daddi!" We both sit up and laugh. "Her little voice is so cute." I say. He smiles and we both head to the kitchen hand in hand.
Christina is already cooking food and Uriah is playing with Mel on the couch. "Hey guys." Uriah says. "Hey." Tobias says. They both sit on the couch and start talking. "Mel come here." She runs up to me all excited. "Let's get you out of those pjs!" I scoop her up into my arms and head to her room.
Her room has a little bed with pink sheets and a little dresser. One of the men from down the hall found the sheets in his room and gave it to her. I fumble through her dresser to find four different outfits. "What do you want to wear?" I set set her down and let her choose. She decides to wear a pink top and purple pants. "Want me to put your hair in pig tails?" She nods. I sit on her bed. "C'mere." I lift her up and plop her onto my knees. Her hair flows to her shoulders now. As I brush her hair she starts to ask questions. "Mamie? Why dwid we mwove?" "Well everyone was moving to the city so we went too, and now you get your own room." "Why dwo I have one nana? Evrwy one has two." I sigh and try not to cry. "Nana Natalie passed away a year before you were born sweetheart, she would have loved you so much." I mange to hold back my tears. I finish putting her hair up in pig tails and let her run free. I fix her light pink sheets and place her teddy bear on the bed.
"Tris! Lunch is ready." Chris yells from the kitchen. "Alright! I'll be right there". I call back. I walk out of the bedroom and into the dining room to find Christina, Uriah, and Tobias all sitting down at the table with food presented on the table. I get Mel settled down in her high chair, sitting down in between Chris and Tobias. We all begin to eat the dinner that Christina prepared. I watch as Melanie's tiny fingers reach for the small pieces of chicken that were scattered on her plate. A smile spreads across my face as I enjoy the food and the company.
"Careful Melanie! I don't want you to accidentally drop the-", Tobias called, watching as Mel looses her grip on the sippy cup full of juice. "Don't worry, I'll clean it up", I say as I pull my chair back, going to grab a paper towel. I finish cleaning up the mess and pick up Melanie. "Hush Sweetheart. It was only an accident.", I slowly rock her back and forth in my arms. Small giggles escape tiny Melanie's mouth as her small hand grabs my nose.
