My jaw drops to the floor. Mom looks nervous, Dad looks normal, and Valerie stares at the guy at my side.
"What is this?" I whisper.
"There's many things we have to tell you," Dad starts.
"Obviously," I mumble.
"When we were your age," Mom starts. "My adoptive mother died, supposedly, so your father's family took me in. I found out that your father and uncles were in a gang. And his stepmother turned out to be evil," she gives me a rundown of their past. "My parents, and adoptive mother, were killed in car accidents. Because of Helen. One day your father and I were driving," she cringes at the memory, it obviously still scars her.
Dad takes over, "We were driving and a car hit our side. Then another on the other side. Your mother was taken to a hospital. I was taken to a secret hospital of the gang so Helen didn't know I was alive. We told your mother on her birthday."
Mom smiles at that memory.
"Okay that's cool. But what does that have to do with today?" I ask.
"We learned that Helen's gang is in town. We need to keep everyone on their toes," Dad glares at the ground.
"Are you telling Jamie?"
"We'll tell her what she needs to know," Mom replies.
I turn to the guy, he's now standing by the door. "Who are you?"
He pushes himself off the wall.
"That's Ethan Mitchell," Valerie says.
"How is he relevant?"
"We needed to see how you handle yourself in a tight situation," Dad sounds like a robot.
Finally I snap, "Did I pass your freaky little spy test?! Or am I not the secret agent daughter you wanted?! But I bet it doesn't matter, Valerie probably is the best spy in the family and I'll never be able to live up to your expectations set by her. I never have and I never will because I am not Valerie! I don't want this. I didn't ask for this! I just want to be a normally teenager. I don't want to be in a gang or whatever!" I turn and pull open the door. Before I go, I add, "I'm not going to be a part of this gang."
I hear someone tell Ethan, "Watch her."
This only manages to make me angrier. I storm out of the room. I mentally follow the directions that got us to the room. I don't get very far before Ethan catches up.
"Where do you think you're going?" he asks, easily keeping my pace.
"I'm leaving," I keep my gaze forward.
"Are you leaving or going back to your cell?"
I stop walking, "Just take me home."
He smirks and turns around, "You forgot a turn back a ways."
"I thought you were taking me away not to my cell, of course I wouldn't know how to get out. I only know how to get to my cell!"
He laughs.
"What?"
"Your cell was literally right next to an exit."
