We've been home for 3 months. Jake and I got back into the flow of school and sports. I haven't told any of my friends about Ashton because he's not important to me anymore. He was just a fling, something to keep me entertained I guess. I mean, that's what I was to him.

I went from class to class. Learned a bit. Had lunch. It was't until 3rd period that my day was ruined. Not ruined, but it took an unpleasant turn. I received a text from calum.

Calum:

Hey, it's been a while. What's up?

I pulled my phone out and hid it under my desk and tried to keep it as discreet as possible when I answered.

Me:

Hey Cal! Nothing much. What's up with you guys? How's tour?

Calum:

It's great! The crowds are huge, we're sold out for our next 6 shows!

Me:

That's great! And how are the guys?

I was hinting at Ashton, but then again I wasn't. I don't care about him. I stared down at my phone screen waiting for a response.

"Miss Montez, what are you doing?" My teacher asks me.

Fuck. "Oh, um, my mom texted me and I was just checking to make sure everything was ok." I lied.

She raised an eyebrow. "Miss Montez there are no phones in this class and I do not tolerate breaking of the rules. Put it away."

I begin to put it in my bag but Calum texts me back.

Calum:

Everyone's doing great. Our moms came out to visit us for the week. Ash...

That was all the preview on my phone showed. My teacher walks to me and holds her hand out. "Give it to me." I place my phone in her hand. "You will get this back at the end of the day. As I said, we do not tolerate rule breaking. Anyway, as I was saying..."

Well thats great. I have to keep Calum waiting for 3 hours. I didn't even get to finish reading his text. What did they do with their moms? What happened to Ashton? Not that I wanted to know it would just be a nice piece of information for me to have. Obviously, since Calum texted it to me he wanted me to know. It was clearly important, it's not like I wanted to know what happened with Ashton. It's because Calum wanted me to know. There was probably something more interesting at the end of the message...

After my last class, I trudge to lacrosse practice. Since today was try outs, it wasn't as heavy as if we were preparing for a game. The coach gathered us in a huddle type thing and began to speak. "Welcome to Lacrosse tryouts." she said with a heavy Australian accent. Fantastic. "By this time next week you should have your teams. This week will not be crucial to your advancement but if you want to make varsity, I suggest you put in your all. Let's begin with sprints. Six. Up and down the field."

As I ran up and down the field my thoughts became clouded. Calum. Luke. Michael. Ashton. No, sprints. Up, down, turf, run. Ashton. I began to sing song lyrics because that helps me clear my mind.

Within a minute I was all packed up.

I've got a ticket to another world.

I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go.

I began to run faster, passing my teammates.

The silent words a hard to speak.

When your thoughts are all I see.

Don't ever leave she said to me.

Four sprints down, two to go.

When we both fall asleep, underneath the same sky.

To the beat of our heats at the same time.

So close, but so far away.

I touch the soft turf as I begin my last sprint.

She sleeps alone.

My heart wants to come home.

I wish I was, I wish I was.

I begin to walk back to the coach, heaving breath in and out.

Beside you...

"Good job, girls. We've got some fast players on this team which is going to be quite helpful. Alright, partner up."

A slim brunette girl begins walking towards me smiling. I assume she wants to be partners. "I heard you singing. It was a nice song and you're talented. But I haven't heard that before. It kind of sounded like a 5 Seconds of Summer song." My throat tied in a knot as she spoke. "I'm Amber, by the way. I'm a new sophomore. What grade are you in?"

"I'm a sophomore, too. I'm Sam" I said offering a hand. She took it gladly.

"But anyway, what song was that?"

I hadn't noticed I was singing their song. It was called Beside You and the boys hadn't released it yet. I had helped them write it but it wasn't going to be released until their last concert.

"Oh, it's from and old pop band." I lied. She nodded.

"Hm, it sounded like something 5sos would write. I love them, I'm going to one of their concerts next week! It's at Hershey Park Stadium near the city. It's not too far away. The tickets were pretty cheap so we're going to the meet & greet after. You should totally come! It's just gonna be my friend Jennifer and me."

"Oh wow. I'll, um, think about it. I don't know what my family has planned for next week."

"It's 5sos! A little family outing can be cancelled for this one time! But suit yourself, tell me if you change your mind. Personally I'm most excited about the meet and greet after. Jennifer is pretty pumped to meet Luke but I'm more of an Ashton girl-"

"Hey can you shut up?" I cut her off. She looked surprised but she stopped talking.

I went down to my teachers classroom to get my phone. She gave me a long lecture about how I shouldn't text in class and how I should obey every rule anywhere. I didn't care much so I blocked most of it out. When she finished talking I left and caught up with Jake. As we walk home I finish reading the text from Calum.

Calum:

Everyone's doing great. Our moms came out to visit us for the week. Ash acted a little weird after you guys left. He seemed kinda hurt, but he's fine now. What ever happened with you guys?

Me:

Oh nothing, just a bit of a misunderstanding. I'm glad he felt better so fast, it took a bit longer for me.

I debated on whether I should send it or not but in the end I thought screw it and sent the message.
