Chapter 4 ~

Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. I concentrated on my heartbeat. Da-dum. My lungs felt heavy and fuzzy. Just a little while longer and I'll be done. Da-dum-dum. Da-dum-dum. I heard a muffled beep. I looked at my watch. I've been underwater for 15 minutes straight. I broke the surface with a loud gasp for air. Instantly, I could feel my body awaken and my mind clearing. I sighed and started to float on my back. I smelled sunscreen.

I was at the base pool. It is a 15 meter length pool. I replayed the events of what happened three days ago. I told the gang about the scholarship, we got lunch detention the next day, then yesterday and today all of us have been home packing our belongings. Luckily, everyone's parents agreed that they could come with us. As long as we came home for Christmas and New Year's. I smiled.

The sun was going down and the cherry blossoms that are surrounding the pool are in bloom. The blossoms are floating around gracefully, while the sun was casting a comforting warm glow. The temperature outside is perfect. It's warm out but not to where it feels like it's suffocating outside.

I sighed as a warm breeze blew over my form. My forest green one piece bathing suit kept the water close to my body; keeping me from feeling the chill of the wind. I crossed my arms under my head and crossed my feet at the ankles. It probably looked like I was sitting in an invisible, floating, and waterproof chair. I don't care, I'm in total peace.

"Lia!" I lifted my head to see who it was. Felicia. I closed my eyes and put my head back in the water. "You know you're supposed to be packing and not act like a mermaid?"

I spread my arms and legs out, almost as if I might start making a water angel. "Why ever not? I'm practically already a mermaid, just minus the tail," I smirked. I heard her huff in annoyance and cross her arms. I snickered.

"Come on, we got to get going soon or we won't make it to the airport in time. Do you really want to upset your brother with that?" I growled and thought about it. I sighed.

"One last lap?" I asked. I stood up straight and waded my way over to the side she was dominating. She sighed in defeat and nodded. I smiled widely.

I gripped the wall with both hands, pulled my legs up to my chest, placed my feet on the pool wall, and pushed myself off. I swam the front crawl. I favored this swimming style. Once I came to the end of the pool, I did a quick and graceful flip, before continuing back to Felicia's position. I hit the wall with my outstretched hand. I stood up and shook my head side to side, getting the extra water off my hair.

"Do you want to know what you remind me of when you're swimming?" Felicia asked me when she helped me get out of the pool.

"Sure," I said monotonously, while she lifted me out of the pool and onto the concrete. Felicia handed me a fluffy white beach towel. I smiled my thanks and she smiled right back. I put the towel on my head and started to dry off my hair.

"A dolphin," she smiled. I peeked out from under the towel. She was smiling genuinely. She was telling the truth.

"Oh really? I thought I was acting like a mermaid just a moment ago," I grinned teasingly. Felicia rolled her eyes at me. I just snickered and continued to dry the rest of my body off.

"Actually, mermaids can be friends with dolphins. So either way, you remind me of a graceful water creature," she argued proudly. I chuckled and wrapped the towel around myself. She laughed light-heartedly and followed me to the lounging chairs. I slipped my flip-flops on and grabbed my bag that contained my dry clothes.

"Just let me change real quick and then we'll be off. Okay?" I looked over at her, waiting for her approval. She nodded yes. I smiled at her and headed towards the locker rooms/bathrooms.

Once inside the girls locker room, I stripped down and dried myself off completely. After getting the girly requirements on, I slip on a pair off cut-off jeans. I actually did cut the jeans so that they would act as shorts that stop at my mid thigh. I pulled on a tight white sport tanktop and a baggy grey sport tanktop. I clasped yet another sapphire necklace around my neck. This one was just a pure, and perfectly circular, sapphire gem. The chain is the same length as the other one.

I put my clothes in my bag and quickly brushed my hair with a brush. When I was done, I returned my brush to my bag and closed it. I swiftly slipped my flipflops on and slung my backpack over my shoulder. Ignoring the other strap I kept it on my right shoulder.

I walked back out to see Felicia where I had left her. We smiled at each other. It was silent for some time, while we enjoyed eachothers company. We were walking in the direction where the sun was setting. It's a warm and peaceful thought to just walk in the last rays of sunlight. The sun is big and a vibrant orange. While the sky was colored pink, purple, orange, red, yellow, and an occasional blue. I sighed.

"I'm going to miss this place," I breathed. Felicia looked over at me and smiled knowingly. Her eyes took on a look of sympathy and friendly love.

"Yeah, me too. But hey, look at it this way." I looked at Felicia, giving her my full attention. "We will all be together, swimming together, and we will all receive a scholarship TOGETHER. No matter what we will be going through this together." I smiled at her.

"Well, when you put it that way......." I trailed off. Felicia started laughing. I laughed too, enjoying the good excuse to just laugh with a friend. We headed towards the airfield on base, while still laughing like a couple of nutcases.
