I carried the last of my luggage into the foyer, along with Jordyn and Bailey. I squinted my eyes, trying to see into the house but rage quitted instead. Brad just has to keep things a secret as long as possible. I walked outside and took a seat on the steps, wiping some sweat off my brow. We’ve been switching between carrying luggage and furniture up to the house for the past half hour. The sun was even starting to set now. It’s casting a warm and comfortable glow, giving the warm and slightly humid night a peaceful ending scene.

I sat there for a little while longer as I took a small break. I heard some footsteps and some slightly labored breathing. I quickly got up and walked down the path to see who needed help. I didn’t get far when I saw Bradley carrying a cooler around the last bend in the trail. It looked like he was about to drop it so I ran over to help. He looked up when he heard me coming.

“Here let me help.” My brother gratefully let me take one of the handles to the cooler. I grunted when I fully supported the coolers weight. “Jeesh, what do you have in here? Bricks?” I breathed through clenched teeth. I kept my eyes straight ahead when I saw him glance and smirk at me. This thing feels like it weighs a ton and I have to grip it with both of my hands so I won’t drop it. Damn handle it’s microscopic. “Having trouble?” he teased me while he was also having some trouble with the weight too, “Well don’t worry, there’s something better than bricks in here.” I rolled my eyes in slight annoyance.

We carried the cooler up to the first platform of the stone stairs. “Okay, let’s set this bad-boy down gently.” I gave an airy laugh as my answer. We faced each other and gently set the cooler down. Brad sat down on the edge of the steps using the cooler as a backrest. I did the same as we simultaneously wiped our foreheads. I heard the door to the house close as an elderly Japanese woman approached us, chuckling.

“You two must be siblings,” she said to us in Japanese. Brad and I both looked up in surprise, looked at each other, then look back at the old lady. She chuckled at our reaction.

“Here,” She held out two boxes wrapped in a pink polka-dot handkerchief. I stood up and walked over to her. “It’s curry rice, I made it myself.” My eyes widened as I took the package from her. I looked up at her, eyes still wide. She smiled kindly to me.

“Arigatou gozaimasu!” I replied in Japanese while bowing.(A/N: It means ‘thank you very much’ in a formal way) The Elder woman’s eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly recovered and started to chuckle.Oh, it’s nothing! Just a housewarming gift for a bunch of new neighbors,” she replied to me, still smiling.

“Still, thank you very much….um….” I stood up from my bow with my brows furrowed. Brad came up behind me and placed a hand on my left shoulder. “Granny. Call me granny, everyone does!” She replied while smiling. I smiled and nodded my head as an okay. As I did so, Brad leaned close to me. “Didn’t know you could speak Japanese,” he whispered in my ear. I looked up and gave him a big smile like a little kid.

“So who do we all have here?” Granny asked. I turned my attention back to her. She was looking at something behind me. I turned around and saw everyone standing on the porch with their jaws wide open.

“I’m Brad and this is my sister Ilithyia,” Brad informed her. I glared at him, before turning to Granny. “Lia,” I held out my hand. We shook hands. “Now who are those darlings?” While Brad pointed out everyone, I turned around to see my friends still with the same exact expression. I smiled and waved at them, making their jaws drop even more. I silently giggled at their reaction. Before I could react, someone backhanded the back of my head.

“Hey!”  I rubbed the spot where I was hit and turned around. I pouted at Brad, earning yet another chuckle from Granny. “Gran asked you a question,” he said in Japanese. I cocked my head to the side looking at mentioned person.

“I don’t mean to pry, but why exactly did all of you move to Japan?” she asked. I warily looked over to Brad and he nodded his head, telling me it’s alright. “The others and I,” I pointed to my dumbstruck friends behind me, “Got a swimming scholarship, but before we can receive it we need to go to school here for a year.” Gran clapped her hands in excitement and smiled kindly at me.

“That sounds wonderful! I happen to know some boys who live nearby that enjoy swimming,” Gran winks at me at that last part. I blink my eyes in surprise as I hear the others giggle behind me, when Jia translated for them. “That goes for the rest of you back there!” The girls quieted down with that wonderful announcement from Granny (again after Jia translated). I smiled at her in thanks.

“Well I have to get back to my garden.” She turns and asks Brad if we have a garden or not. I ignore their conversation and look longingly at the food package that still resides in my hands. Just as I’m tugging on the neatly tied bow, Granny says my name. I jump and answer, “Yes ma’am?” She laughs at my reaction.

“I was going to ask if you and maybe some of your friends would like to come over and help me with some chores around the house. These old bones don’t work like they used too. I could also teach you a trick or two about gardening.” I give a short bow. “I would love to. Thank you.”  She leans in towards me, “And maybe I can introduce you to those boys I mentioned earlier,” giving me a hint. My face suddenly lit up with heat, signaling my blush.

Granny started to laugh. I smiled awkwardly with that stupid blush clinging to my face. She waved goodbye and started to walk back down the path. I sheepishly looked at Bradley. He was trying his hardest not to smile, so it looked like a contorted grin. I scowled at him, muttering an insult under my breath.  He chuckled. I started to walk back to the porch, but saw that everyone was gone. ‘Uhh…..where did everyone go?’

“They all went back down the hill to bring up even more of our stuff,” Brad said. I looked at him like he had a third eye or something. He rolled his eyes. “You really need to stop voicing your thoughts aloud,” He answered me. I nodded my head in understanding. Brad walked past me, ruffled my hair, and started down the path. I glared at his back and fixed my hair a bit. “C’mon let’s get the rest of our stuff in the house so we can unpack tomorrow. Race you,” he said over his shoulder and started to run. I sighed and started to run down the path with a smile on my face.
