January 5th, 2013

"So I just show him around the school? Like all his classes and stuff?"

The guidance counselor, Ms. Lynch, nodded her head in response. "Just give him a quick tour of the whole  school. You have been excused out of all your classes and you are allowed to make up all your work tomorrow. Also, I'm sure that your brother would love to explain all the lessons you don't understand."

The thought of my brother teaching me anything was terrifying, considering the fact that he just goofed off with his friends during most of his classes. He was even failing art.

I glanced down at the notebook I held in my hands that listed all of the new kid's information, which included his class schedule, home address, phone number, and of course, his name. Honestly, I felt sorry for the boy because his name was one of the most common ones in America. Well, a combination of the two most common names in America. Tyler Joseph.

"Okay, so I just show this kid around and I get extra credit for planning for college and careers?" Ms. Lynch nodded as she shuffled  a few papers around on her desk. "Yes, you will pass if you do this. You are lucky that your friend, Paige, offered to let you take her position over for a few weeks."

"Yeah, lucky," I muttered under my breath, but in truth, I absolutely hated having to do this and my first job hadn't even started yet. I wasn't necessarily shy, more like I was anti-social. I just preferred not to mess with people outside of my own friend group.

"Okay," Ms. Lynch declared, clapping her hands together. "Tyler is in the front office now with his mother and siblings. Be sure to nice and welcoming, Kiva."

I promised I would be before stepping out of her small office and turning a corner to see a family of four seated in the uncomfortable chairs that my school refused to replace. A little girl and what appeared to be the youngest boy were the only ones that seemed excited about starting a new school. The others just seemed bored out of their minds.

I approached the family, a small smile on my face. "Hi, which one of you is Tyler?" The boy that sat next to the little girl stood up. "I'm Tyler."

He was dressed in a skeleton hoodie with a pair of skinny jeans and floral vans. To me, the skeleton hoodie didn't look very warm, considering the fact that it was the beginning of January, but Tyler seemed to be the person that didn't care what temperature it was outside.

"Well, it's very nice to meet you, Tyler. I'm Kiva and I'll be giving you a tour of the school." I turned towards his family members. "The rest of your guides should be here soon, okay?"

Mrs. Joseph smiled. "Thank you, Kiva."

Tyler hugged his mother and his siblings and said goodbye before following me out the office door, which put us in the front entrance of the school. "This is where all of the highschoolers wait for the bell to ring. You aren't allowed to go to your locker until the bell rings. I find that rule quite stupid, but whatever."

I hugged notebook to my chest as I noticed that Tyler's first period class was art, which happened to be my brother's first class as well. I prayed that my brother would leave him alone instead of trying to get him in trouble. However, by observation, I noted that Tyler seemed to be quiet by nature. He would probably steer clear of trouble.

Since our school was pretty big, I was pointing out things constantly. I even introduced him to a few students that appeared to wandering the hallway. He only seemed interested in this kid named Josh who could play the drums pretty well. He barely spoke a word the entire time, but right when we left the music room, he finally developed vocal cords. "Kiva is a strange name."
