Epilogue
Mrs. Daniel's Pov
"Where are we going?" I laughed and swayed into my wife as we walked hand in hand across a very busy parking lot towards a cement structure.
My heart stuttered in wonder as she turned and flashed me a brilliant smile, the lines in her face deepening. "I'm not telling you. It'll spoil the surprise." She stuck her tongue out at me. I just laughed, forever loving of her silly antics.
It's been about a month since the wedding and things have been amazing. It wasn't a very big ceremony, only Shay's mom, Genny, Genny's family, and a few other family friends. But it was simple and beautiful. I still feel my heartbeat speed up every time I think about the way she looked in her dress.....
"You're thinking about the wedding again, aren't you?"
My cheeks burned and I received an answering laugh in response before I was pulled into a muscled side. It had become our routine every morning to get up and go running and the hard miles have really paid off.
I wrapped an arm around her waist and bury my face in her now shoulder-length hair. "I can't help it. The honeymoon was just sooooo great." I whined into her neck, smiling against her skin when I felt a shudder go through her body.
She scoffed and pinched my side, prompting a very unladylike squeal to escape my mouth and more than a few heads to turn in our direction. "Behave, or I might have to take you home and relive the honeymoon phase."
A slow smile spread across my face at the raspy low tones of her voice. I loved it when she got all authority figure on me. She decided after a long time of dealing with my constant nagging, to pursue her career in cardiovascular surgery. And I have to say, seeing her in scrubs is probably the hottest thing I have ever seen.
The hospital here is pretty great, they're like a second family and everyone knows my name now. Shay chose this profession because she is fascinated with the heart and it is constantly changing and re-assessing itself. The heart is forever a mystery, and that is why she loves it so much.
Also because Shay is a firm believer in experience is the key to success. Her experiences in life, bad or good, have both led to her success and her growth as an individual. She is stronger and she knows who she is now, and I am so so proud of her for that.
I, of course, am still teaching. The high school I transferred to is very laid-back and secure. Everyone is lovely, and even though my story has been broadcasted across the news a few times, no one has brought it up in at least a year. I am beyond grateful for that. Caleb is still serving out his sentence for attempted murder, and attempted rape. He will not be getting out anytime soon.
I'm snapped back into my thoughts when the crowed around us suddenly thickens. My eyebrows come together in a sharp 'v' as I squint, attempting to try and see through the darkness of the tunnel we're suddenly descending into.
"Shay.." My voice is low with apprehension. The only answer I receive is a reassuring kiss on the cheek as her arm tightens around my waist.
My unease melts away very quickly when I catch sight of the flashing neon lights and elaborate but amazing graffiti art that decorated the previous underground parking garage walls.
