As if it wasn't enough, she was scuttling around the house, touching every notch in the wood, the rough texture of the stucco walls, cold tiles floor beneath her sweaty bear feet. She had to touch everything, absorb the smell.
This was the last time Rachel was ever going to see her small home in her sleepy town. She never expected to leave, no not ever.
That twisted nervous, tangled, knot in her gut only grew knowing she was going to leave behind her childish memories. She grew up here.
Being the only child, she had created so many friendships and created a hard bond with her home. But she watched it tear and cripple in front of her. Smash into little fragments of broken memories.
She entered the living room and spun gripping the stairs railing and bounced up and down, up and down the steps as many times as she wanted to. She wanted these last moments to be important, she wanted these memoris to last forever.
Once she reached the top, she inhaled that familiar smell that all families make to feel at home, to feel safe and welcomed.
As she walked upstairs, everything just felt dofferent. With all the rooms pretty much being empty and solem, quiet. She walked into the rooms and imagined their furniture still there. She opened door on her bedroom and walked inside. It looked more like an old attic without her lights hanging around the perimiter of the ceiling. It felt empty without her bed, dresser, mirror, it felt wrong.
She looked down at her feet, hanging her head as she paced back and forth for the last time in her room. She had all of her friends in her room, all gathered and created more memories, but these memories were soon to be gone.
She trudged her feet over to the window where she peered out and saw the skdewalk, and her parents car parked in front. She watched her parents haul things in the back of the moving truck, as well as the family Subaru. She frowned a little. Why did she have to move in the first place? She never got a say in the final desicion.
She shook her head and went to the doorway before glancing over her shoulder to see her room, for the last time.
She bounced downstairs and saw the boxes stacked on top of eachother. Some big, some small, heavy and light, but they had what was stored away from her room.
There was sloppy writing labeling in sharpie written on the boxes. Rachel never really had good hand writting, she was never insecure or bothered by it. She thought of her hand being used by a kindergartner everytime she tried to write. A pencil held by a small fist.
Rachel reached for a box and used her fingers to find a good grip. She brought it to her chest and let out a loud huff. Her muscles seemed strained, this box was heavy, what were they stones?
She held it to her chest and let her legs hold most of the weight. She carefully waddled herself out the front door and tword the moving van. She approached her dad and gave a twisted smile.
"Hey sunshine," He chimed with a toothy smile.
"I have... a, oof. Box." She grunted.
Her father reached out and pulled the box from her arms with a quiet grunt.
"Thanks Sugar Plum." He said and set it in the moving trailor.
She nodded and spun on her heels and headed inside the home again. Something told her she was defiantly going to feel the ache tomorrow.
Her mother came out with a small box, and flashed flashed a quick smile before walking over to Rachel. What now, she thought irritated.
"Hey do you mind handing this to your dad?" She asked.
Before she could answer the box was already placed in her hand and her mother lightly pushed her with her hand to go.
Rachel rolled her eyes and walked over to her dad, handed him the box and presumed.Once the family had successfully loaded everything the moving truck had already left and the only thing remaining was the crowded Subaru.
Rachel's father placed his hands on his hips and took one last glance at their house, small, quiet, cold stone.
"Well team, this is it!" He exclaimed.
We stood side by side no matter how much I begged to stay in the car. I stared at the empty looking windows. It heart my heart knowing that I'm leaving all this behind, all of my childhood. I don't want to leave, I'm afraid of what's ahead, what will happen. So many things can go wrong, so many. Rachel tried wrapping her head around them but it only gave her bitter anxiety.
"I can't believe this is happening!" My mom says in excitement.
"Whoop, whoop." I say sarcastically while raising a weak fist.
"Don't worry it will be fine." My mom said fidgeting with her fingers.
"Sure..." I mumbled and rolled my eyes.
I trudged and opened the door behind the drivers side and crawled in and slammed it shut.
I glanced back a bit and saw a little hurt in my parents eyes. Whatever, I didn't want this. They weren't telling me something though. You don't just decide to move your family from out of the blue there has to be a reason. And I didn't know why. Money? If it was then wouldn't they have told me? Maybe there's a sick relative didn't know, but they would tell me. What could it be? Terrorist threatening our family? No too scary but a possibility.
She pressed her temples on the window and sighed. Her parents opened their car doors and got inside, buckling their seat belt.
"Rachel were doing this for the good of our family. We know you like it here but just try to be happy. Think about all the good." My mom spoke softley.
"And the bad." She muttered.
She buckled herself in and they began to pull out of the driveway, away from broken memories that would play a cruel role in her new life.
She stared blankly out the window with a jaded expression. She didn't even know what the new house even looked like, much where it is. Her parents have like made everything secret about the move, never told her a thing about it. Rachel wondered why when they refused to answer her questions when the need arrived at the dinner table.
