I spotted the running girl a block from my place; the sight made me pause mid-step. Her face was drained of colour, her legs like broken twigs that gracelessly slid over the peaks and twists of sidewalk. I imagined her heart. Its dull thump-thump-thump, frantic in the speed, heavy in the rise and fall. My own pulse was startled in response, hitching quickly, evading composure.
She wasn't screaming, but her eyes were. Her fear was wide, round, and brown. Mirrored twice as she briefly glanced my way.
In that moment, I understood.
She was running from me.
Yay! One hundred words! Thanks a bunch for the tag Holly_Gonzalez -- flash fiction's always an interesting challenge.
In case anyone who reads this is interested, "100 Word Scream" is currently being hosted by Wattpad's Paranormal Community -- the directive is to write a horror/creepy pasta/paranormal story that's exactly one hundred words in length. These kind of exercises are super awesome for brevity practice.
Oh, and you're also supposed to tag ten others for the challenge. But tagging really isn't my thing ;)
