SUMMERTIME

It ended so quietly
Our year in the sunlight
(Too young to feel burns!)
It ended like three light periods at the finish of a sentence
It ended like the flip of white paper and the sliding in of a bookmark
It ended with a look on a face and a head turned
It ended. My thoughts kept pace with your feet, before falling behind
It ended. It needed to breathe clean air before all the smells of spring
(At least, I think it ended)
At least, there was no missing it yet.

All my friends have packed their minds inside their bags
They're going places, they have a world to swallow
They try this and they try that and they have all the courage that I lack
(I don't think I have a world to swallow)

Soon we'll be grownups, staring up at the wall of summer
(You know this, don't you?)
And we'll climb it, and we're climbing it
Limbs grabbing, legs stretching
Bodies straining not to shatter
And we'll fall, someday, not long after we reach the top
Yes, we'll all fall once we need to

That's what I think.

Because school ended and I'm feeling nostalgic. I also turned seventeen :)
