Secrets, Secrets Are No Fun

"Please remember, this was a long time ago. Things have changed now. Completely." Joelle said shakily.

I just watched her intently; eyes darting back from her to Bridgett.

"Okay. Do you remember freshman year when someone plastered pages all over the cafeteria?" Bridgett asked warily.

"Of course I do!" I said; voice rising, "The pages were parts of my poetry. I was mortified that day." My cheeks reddened just thinking of that day.

I had gone into the school; completely excited to show everyone my new haircut, only to find pages of my journal taped to every door and window in the building. People were running up to me asking if I had found a publisher, some were laughing at me, others just looked scared to even talk to me.

I remember ripping off a page from the wall to read. It was the poem I had written about losing old friends; somewhat sad, and definitely personal. I had written out my frustrations and had over exaggerated a little bit, but hey...I thought I could. I didn't know anyone was ever going to read it. I had always kept my journal hidden. My writing was for my eyes, and for my eyes only.

"Haley. You alright?" Bridgett said, waving her hands in front of my face. I snapped out of my flashback and turned to face Joelle and Bridg again.

"Yah. Go on." I mumbled.

"Okay, well..." Joelle started, "That was...that was...I mean..." She couldn't finish as she had started to cry.

"You can tell me Joelle. Was it Ellie? What did she do?" I said, moving towards Joelle, trying to comfort her.

"It's not what she did. It's what she made me do." She croaked out between tears.

"What. Did. She. Make. You. Do?" I asked through clenched teeth. I was beginning to get angry as I started to piece together thoughts.

"I can't tell it. Bridg, help me out please." Joelle whimpered.

"You see, Ellie found out something about Joelle that was meant to be kept a secret. So Joelle of course begged her not to tell anyone....Ellie agreed not to.....as long as.....as long as Joelle did what she wanted. You know how manipulative she can be Hales. Joelle had no choice." Bridg said, looking me up and down as if she were trying to read my emotions.

"She wanted me to start this rumor about you..." Joelle spoke up, "but it was just so awful. I refused."

"But you let her post my journal for the public to see?" I yelled, anger rising in me as I stood.

"I had to! She would've told my mom Hales. It would've killed her." Joelle cried even louder now.

"What would've killed your mom? I don't understand. Why would you post my journal? You know how personal my writing is to me. You know how embarrassed I was that day. You caused all of this!!" I screamed, wanting a clearer answer.

"Calm down Hales, she was in a tough situation." Bridg said, putting her hands on my shoulders to try and make me sit back down.

"Oh, sorry I'm upset about one of my BEST FRIENDS betraying me." I sarcastically remarked.

Bridg rolled her eyes while Joelle continued to cry. I stared off into space for a couple of minutes trying to gather my thoughts until I finally spoke.

"What does Ellie have on you?"

"I..I.....I can't say." Joelle answered.

"You know you can tell me anything." I said, trying to silently apologize to Joelle as I bent down in front of her. I had been a little harsh, and she is a very sensitive person.
