Up in the Air

"Now you've got your passport, right?"

"Yesss, mom." I groaned. We were waiting at the terminal for my flight to begin boarding. My teachers and fellow classmates were all doing the same as me: telling their families goodbye, and promising to behave.

"Now remember, you have to come back Haley." Mom chuckled.

I had always expressed a love for Europe and had often joked with mom that instead of coming home I would just 'accidentally' miss my flight.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll try not to get too attached."

"Right. Well I love you darling. Try to FaceTime us once. Oh and take loads of pictures!"

"Will do." I said as I hugged mom and picked up my things. An announcement had just been made for our flight, 209 , to begin boarding. When I reached the beginning of the hallway leading to the plane I looked back one more time and waved bye to mom.

Upon turning around, I was met with a familiar, smirking face. Ellie. I hadn't seen her in weeks and was shocked as she began to run to catch up to me in line.

"Hales, what ticket number are you?"

I shuddered as I heard her call me by my nickname. Only people extremely close to me ever called me that, and after her recent text I no longer thought of her as one of those people.

"Umm, I'm seat number 47, row 17." I mumbled, avoiding eye contact with her.

"Oh my gosh!" She squealed, "I'm row 17, seat 48. We're right beside each other!"

I immediately felt sick to my stomach. I looked up to see a malicious grin and cold green eyes staring at me.

"Yayyy!" I sarcastically cheered. "I s'pose we're BFFS now, right?" I batted my eyelashes quickly, trying to be as annoying as possible.

"Oh no," Ellie replied quickly with a fake sympathetic look on her face, "did you not get my text? I thought I made it clear we weren't friends anymore."

"I got it Ellie. I get the point. What I don't get is why you're calling me 'Hales' and trying to hang all over me." I spat.

"Well Amelia couldn't come....so I thought I'd just have a little fun with you." And with that Ellie winked at me, turned on her heels and boarded the plane before me. I could feel my face flushing red with anger. I had promised myself that no one could ruin this trip and now Ellie was trying her hardest to. I could feel a headache coming on and it was getting increasingly hot as I made my way to my seat on the airplane. Of course my carry on bag was super heavy because mom had packed everything but the kitchen sink into it "just in case".

I finally found row 17 and began looking for my seat. It didn't take long to find it considering Ellie was standing up waving at me, yelling "Over here!". Hallelujah, I thought, I've got an aisle seat. At least I had one escape from Ellie. The overhead cargo bin was already open when I reached my seat. Setting my coat down I went to swing my carry on into the bin when I heard a voice yell "WATCH OUT!". Confused, I spun around and whacked a boy right in the head with my bag.

"Damn! You've got one hell of a arm!" The boy who I had hit said.

His accent was definitely Irish, and he had cool blue eyes with dirty blonde hair.

"Yeah, sorry about that." I said and quickly sat down. I was in no mood to hold a conversation with anyone. I was just ready to be in Europe, off this plane.

All of a sudden I heard Ellie giggle. I looked to my left in the aisle and there the boy was knelt down on a knee making silly faces at me trying to get my attention.

"What?" I said, a little too harshly.

"Man, what's with the crabby attitude." He scoffed.

"Sorry, it's just been a rough morning. No, make that a rough few weeks." I sighed.

"Well, you're on a plane headed to London. You better be feeling better soon." He winked.

"I'm sure I will once I'm actually there." I lightly smiled.

All of sudden the flight attendant flashed the "Fasten Your Seatbelt's" sign above.

"We'll that's me cue, I best be finding a seat." The boy said turning away. He quickly turned back and smiled at me. "Sorry I didn't catch your name love?"

"It's Haley!" I smiled.

"Nice to meet you Haley, I'm Niall." And with that he disappeared towards first class.

"OH MY GOSH. YOU KNOW WHO THAT WAS DONT YOU?" I heard Ellie practically yell as I turned.

"No." I said annoyed.

"Of course you wouldn't know. You're never one to keep up. That's Niall Horan from the band One Direction. Ya know, super rich and famous?!"

"Cool." I said, trying to sound bored and uninterested.

"He totally talked to you and you didn't even fan girl. You are so weird. I thought I was about to jump out of my seat." She giggled.

"We'll I'm glad you contained yourself." I huffed as I put in my earphones to drown out Ellie's incessant talking.

I had honestly known who I was talking too, I had just tried to play it cool. I mean, I had almost knocked the guy out with my bag, I didn't figure he wanted a screaming fan girl to go along with the hit. A part of me hoped I would see him again, but the realist in me reminded me that it would be impossible to see him once we landed. Security would be crawling all over the airport just to ensure his safe arrival to wherever he was going. Oh well I thought, at least I got a few minutes to talk to him. I told myself that was enough for me, but I found myself repeating our conversation in my head. I reached for my blanket and cuddled up trying to get comfortable. As I found the perfect position and began to drift off to sleep, Niall appeared when I closed my eyes. It seemed he wouldn't get out of my mind...
