"Luke, do you need a ride?" Kirstie asked generously.
"No, no. I'm fine," He smiled.
"Okay, be careful," She said, before hugging him tightly. "Love you."
"Love you too, Kirst. Congratulations," Luke whispered into her ear. He knew this was a big deal for her, considering that she hardly opened her true self up to anyone. This engagement was important.
"Bye Luke," Calum smiled, watching as he walked towards the bus stop.
Luke turned around and waved, only to see the couple waving back...but their other hands were occupied. Of course they're holding hands. They're in love, Luke. Calum will never do that with you, Luke.
He snapped out of it, and boarded the bus. The blonde stared out the window and watched buildings fly by, consumed with his thoughts.
Luke thought about Calum, what this all meant. He couldn't believe that he had done this to Kirstin.
This must be the ultimate betrayal in a friendship.
But...why did Calum fuck him when he knew he was in a relationship? Why did he sleep with Luke if he was proposing the next day? Or did Kirstin propose (even if that was an unlikely possibility, considering that she was very shy and never made the first move)? Or maybe he didn't plan on it, but when he saw Luke, Calum just...
There were many unanswered questions here. But there was one Luke couldn't get out of his head.
Does he have feelings for Calum again?
It had been years since he'd seen the Maori boy. Their high school romance was short, but meant a lot to both of them all the same. Surely he's over that by now, Luke was not some pathetic loser who dwelled on the past every waking moment of everyday.
But all it took was one look across the room, a little drunken conversation, and...here they are now. Maybe Luke hadn't buried those feelings so well.
And the blonde felt extremely jealous of the couple tonight, that means there's something there, right? Or he just gets attached too easily.
Whatever. As he gets off the bus, the only thought on Luke's mind is:
He has to see Calum again.
Not for those reasons, of course! They couldn't do that again, there's too much at risk now, with the engagement and all.
Besides, Calum probably wouldn't want to. That night, he was just acting on drunken thoughts. That's nothing. Luke is nothing to him.
And it should stay that way.
Luke cannot jeopardize a friendship over a boy! And...hey, can he even consider Calum a friend anymore?
When he told Calum he was going to a college in America, he was so sad. Calum looked like he was going to break.
But he just pulled Luke into his arms. They cried together for a long time, just sitting there.
And then they broke up. It was the hardest, most painful thing Luke had ever done.
But Kirstie was there for him in college. All Luke told her was that he had a boyfriend back in Australia that he loved with all his heart, but they broke up against their own wishes.
Kirstin didn't need the details, she just held his hand and stroked his hair and let him lament over his dead relationship.
This was Luke's repayment for all those times she had been there for him. He felt so dirty, so guilty.
And so utterly confused with Calum. He needs answers.
Luke needs to not ruin a relationship, friendship, and, well, ex-friendship/relationship.
God, when did things get so complicated?
