"Zo?" I hear someone ask me. I turn away from looking at the fresh herbs to find Dan standing behind me, a shy smile on his face. My eyes widen and my face breaks out into a grin.
"Dan!" I exclaim, setting my shopping basket on the ground and pulling Dan into a bone-crushing hug. His arms wrap around my waist and I feel him bury his face in between my shoulder and neck.
"It's been so long since I've seen you," Dan says when we pull away. "I'm glad Phil made me come to the grocery store. The delivery man didn't bring all of our groceries."
"My cabinets were a little bare and I wanted to get out of the apartment," I tell him, grabbing a small of bundle of basil and putting it in my basket.
"How's Tay treating you?" Dan asks, getting a dark look in his eyes.
"He broke my phone's screen and he lost his job," I say hesitantly. "But he's got an interview tomorrow and seems to be in a better mood."Dan rolls his eyes and I bite my lip. I probably shouldn't have told him, but I couldn't help it.
"Hey, why don't you come with me?" Dan asks suddenly, grabbing my free hand.
"Come with you where?" I ask, frowning.
"Anywhere," Dan says, revealing his dimples when he smiles.
"Okay," I say and set my basket down, forgetting about groceries momentarily. He grins and then takes off running through the grocery store, leading the way to the exit doors. I can't help but let a single laugh escape as he hails a cab and we climb inside after Dan gives him directions. At first we ride quietly, the only noise is emitting from the cabbie's radio, but then Dan turns to me and takes both of my hands in his. I give him a questioning look and he leans forward and connects his lips to mine, taking me by surprise. I pull away, confused. He stares at me, a look of hurt in his chocolate brown eyes.
"I'm sorry, Dan." I say, shaking my head as I feel tears prick behind my eyes.
"Don't be," Dan replies, caressing my cheek. "But I want to be with you, Zo. You're all I think about; you can ask Phil. And the only thing keeping me and you apart is that dickhead boyfriend of yours. Please, Zo, leave him."
"It's not that easy, Dan." I say, pulling away from his touch. "I can't just leave him."Dan sighs and turns his head to look out the window. I stare at him, looking at his hair that's slightly curled from where it's misting outside. I can't deny the fact that he is handsome and so sweet. And Tay would never know if I had kissed Dan or not. I scoot over closer to Dan and he looks at me, a frown creasing his eyebrows. I lean forward and I kiss him, not thinking about Tay right now. Dan's fingers twine through my hair and I rest my hands on his shoulders. His hands slide down to my waist and lift me to sit on his lap.
"Hey!" The cabbie yells suddenly, slamming on the brakes. "Get out my cab if you're going to be doing that!"
We get out, laughing and red faced, and Dan throws the cabbie his money before he closes the door.
"Where can we go where we have privacy?" I ask Dan as we stand there getting drizzled on.
"I know a place," Dan says and grabs my hand, smirking.
