Mates Are Overrated

Silent Owls Chapter 5

Adam hadn’t let go of me until we had gotten into our room. Adam sent someone else to get my stuff from my parent’s house. He didn’t want to risk losing me. I sat on the bed, waiting for something to happen. Adam was just pacing across the room.

“I’m going to talk to the Alpha, he’s my friend,” Adam finally broke the silence.

“Should I wait here?” I asked.

“Hell no! I want you with me at all times,” He pulled me off the bed and encased me with a hug.

“He doesn’t know where I am, Adam,” I tried to help.

“He could track your sent, Natalie,” He said, “C’mon, follow me,”

                Adam took my hand and led me into the hallway. He pulled me alongside him through various twists and turns. He stopped when we faced a giant oak door. He didn’t waste any time rushing into the room beyond the door. Once inside he quickly just the door. The room was a giant office/study. You couldn’t see the walls because they were covered with bookcases. There was a desk in the middle of the room and some couches scattered in the room. A man was sitting at the desk, he was writing something down on a piece of paper. The man looked up at us with a blank face.

“Adam, what a surprise. What do you need?” The man put the papers away in a draw.

“It’s a long story,” Adam said.

“Then, please, take a seat,” The man gestured to the many couches.

Adam and I sat down at the closet couch to the man who I presumed was the Alpha. Adam explained everything about how we are mates and about Darin. When Adam finished the Alpha had an amused look on his face.

“You two have a hell of a situation,” He laughed.

“Please, is there any way you can help us?” Adam pleaded.

“The only thing I can suggest is move to another state and pack. You obviously don’t want to do that; but that’s all I can do to help,” The alpha sighed.

“While we decided can you look up on any information on him?” Adam asked.

“Anything for an old friend,” The alpha dismissed us.

When we got back to our room we sat in silence. I got up and decided I was going to get a shower. I was in the doorway to the bathroom when Adam stopped me.

“You’re not leaving my side,” Adam got up and walked over to me.

“I’m not, I’m getting a shower,” I explained.

“Then I’ll join you,” Adam smirked.

“No, it’ ok I can handle this myself,” I tried to close the door but he stopped me.

“Sorry, I’m just…I don’t even know,” Adam apologized.

“God dammit, get in here!” I pulled him into the room and slammed the door shut.

I couldn’t sleep, it was three am and I didn’t even feel tired. Adam was asleep next to me while I was wide awake. I slipped away from Adam and sat on the floor in front of the bed. I just sat there memorized, I couldn’t move, I couldn’t blink and I couldn’t breathe. A figure appeared in front of me; it was Darin. He sat down in front of me.

“I’ve found you, Natalie,” He whispered, “And he can’t help you,”

I involuntarily turned my head to see Adam laying in the bed with blood seeping through his throat. I couldn’t scream , I tried to but I couldn’t. When I turned my attention back to Darin he had a sick smile on his face.

“You’re mine, Natalie; only mine!” He whispered.

I shot up; my hand flung to my chest. My heart was beating rapidly. I was breathing fast and I felt tears down my cheeks.  Adam was sitting in front of me with the most worried look on his face. He pulled me to his chest, He rocked me back in forth.

“You were screaming, I thought you were hurt. I got so scared!” I noticed that Adam was crying.

“Why are you crying?” I sniffled.

“Why wouldn’t I cry if my mate was hurt?” He held onto me tighter, “What happened?”

I explained my nightmare, each gruesome detail I spoke Adam held me tighter, “That’s it, we’re moving to another state! I will not have some mutt haunting my mate!”

“Where will we go?” I asked.

“I’ll figure that out with the alpha, he’ll help us,”

The next day we were back in the alpha’s office.

“Jason, we need to get out of here; you know what he’s doing to her!” Adam hissed.

“I know; I’ve been calling packs that are in alliance to us from all across the country. There are three that will accept you into their packs; the Red Forest Pack, the Silent Owl Pack and the Mossy Rocks Pack. That’s it” The Alpha offered, “The packs in order are located in California, Florida and Minnesota,”

“What do you think, Natalie?” Adam asked me.

I honestly had no idea, “I like beaches but California seems to close for me,”

“Can you tell the Silent Owl Pack that we would be glad to join?” Adam asked the alpha.

“Of course,” the alpha nodded.

We were just about t leave before alpha Jason called us back.

“I have information on Darin,” Adam looked at me, asking if I wanted to know. I nodded, “Darin had been seeing Natalie’s sister, Nicole, for five years. Nicole has her own mate in which she is married to. Nicole had three children and two of them are with Darin. Nicole’s mate knows nothing of this. We have established that Darin knows of his children and are a part of their lives. Darin has actually been with several women; Darin has five children, two with Nicole, two with another and one with another. Darin is…married to Michelle Dell who has two of his children. Natalie, I’m so sorry,”

I had to admit that hearing all that hurt a little bit. Learning that two of my nephews and nieces are with my ex mate, my ex mate had five fucking kids, is married and he still wants me. That just pisses me off. I showed no emotion to any of this. I shouldn’t care because I have a new life now.

“Natalie?” Adam looked at me with a questionable look on his face.

“What? Are you expecting me to break down in tears? I don’t care about what he has done, not now anyway. Maybe back then but not now,” I said.

“Well, um, ok,” Adam turned his attention back to Jason, “When will we leave?”

“You can go tonight because I was just informed by mind link that Darin was spotted in our territory,”
