RECAP

Roger was shaken out of his thoughts by the ringing phone. He gave a quick glance at the clock. 3:40 am. Fellow detective Carl was calling. He picked up the call with trembling hands and heard exactly what everybody had been dreading, “Roger, we have a fourth Catherine!”

GET OFF ME YOU BASTARD!

STOP..... DON'T!

AH! LET.....ME......

Catherine Granger, now better known as Catherine#4, sprang awake from the same atrocious nightmare for the billionth time. Worse than that, she could not even recall all the reasons behind the nightmare; and this was having an even more perplexing effect on her. She felt as if some kind of dark power had consumed one whole month of her life by putting her into a deep slumber. And when she woke up, she realized that it had also lured her memories into a bleak, obscure dungeon and locked them up deviously.

She felt her sweat trickle through her hair and soak her pillow. As she had been lying down continuously for over a month, her bed now suffered a severe dent exactly the shape of her seemingly lifeless body.

Even though she found everything extremely bizarre and unusual, Catherine was glad to regain consciousness at last. All that she needed now was a good brain exercise- to recollect the past, to familiarize with the present and to anticipate the future. But her doctors thought that it was too risky at that moment, and so kept her under drugs.

Yeah, like that’s helping me out of my crazy nightmares!

Since the return of her consciousness, she had become a sensation, a living legend to the paranoid city. ‘The woman who survived’ they called her. Her cabin corridor seemed to have become an amusement park to reporters, journalists and photographers alike. Their daily commotion would hardly let her rest and heal.

But now it was almost midnight. Her cabin did not feel like a vacuum only when the cordial nurse felt the urge to check on her.

“Need anything, Miss Catherine?” The nurse was making sure.

“No, thanks.” Catherine replied laconically with her coarse voice.

The nurse left. Vacuum again…..Until Catherine’s eyes fell on a muscular shadow zooming behind the curtain in front of her bed. A loud shriek from her feeble throat filled the entire corridor. In fact, she screamed more in pain than in horror, because her reflex made her turn her head towards the shadow. But it only reminded her once again that she had suffered from a serious head injury and that her neck is almost broken.

After a few moments of dizziness, Catherine recognized the nurse’s voice chastising the imprudent shadow.

“Sir, I warned you not to sneak into my patient’s room like that, you almost gave her a heart-attack! Sir, our patients are gems that we need to protect and heal-”
