The Day After

Personally  I think Freddie recovered well after his surgery.  He looked happy, but of course that all changed after we told him about the fire.  He would be the last unicorn cured from this disease in miles until they rebuild the hospital, which won't be until a year or so.  We were all fearing the worst when it comes to what actually caused it, and who knows when that'll be?

"Lylia, Lylia come quick!" Freddie shouted, anxiously.  He was in the living room and the TV was on talking about the disaster and the unicorn surgeries that would be cancelled.  Only when Lylia got there she didn't see the president reporting on it, it was a local news reporter.

"So are you telling me that there ARE such things as unicorns?" asked a rather old man on the TV to the reporter who was at the remains of the old hospital.

"Well, there is no key evidence yet, when a farmer spotted the fire he called the fire fighters.  He said he thought it had been a wild fire, and had never heard of a hospital there.  That's when the police thought it was strange and started investigating the cause of the fire.  They found burnt papers that had miraculously  survived the fire talking about some type of surgery for horn removal.  They're still looking into it, but they're pretty sure," answered the news reporter.

"Well, Nancy surely that can't be enough evidence to be so sure, I mean there-"

"Well I was saving the best for last," she said, cutting him off, "They said they found an actual skeleton at the scene of the fire!  They said it could be a horse, but they're almost positive it was a unicorn that had just had this surgery."

"Well, never would I of thought that the fairy tales we heard as a child could of been true!"  At that Mom turned of the t.v. and sat in silence, pondering what they would do next.

"Well, you know maybe-" Lylia started before the piercing sound of the door bell ringing cut her off, a sound neither of them had heard in a really long time.  Getting up Lylia, Mom, and Julie walked to it as Dad sat with Freddie.

At the door was the last thing either of them expected, a small, wrapped bundle, and in it a baby unicorn.  It was sound asleep, snoring a little with a bit of drool at the edge of it's mouth.  It was a light, baby blue, different from Lylia with her bright white coat and piercing purple eyes.  Or Freddie's matted brown and soft hazel eyes.  It looked so very peaceful until it's deep blue, glistening eyes opened and it yet out a yawn.  If it was afraid they couldn't see it.

Mom looked up and around, searching for whoever left him here.  Unicorns were hard to come by, they were created by strange magic in India and then transported to America and sent to a family on the unicorn list.  Afterwards they were protected by the government and put with the other families in a small, protected community.

"Whoever left him here they must of been in trouble," remarked Freddie, who had snuck up behind them to see what had kept them so long.

"Can we keep it?" asked Lylia, gazing down, lovingly.

"I don't think we have any other option," replied Mom, and in an ever so graceful manner picked it up and hurriedly carried it into the house.
