when i was a child,
innocent and fragile,
i played pretend
to enter another reality.
with my friends
we played family,
doctor,
and chef.
it was all fun and games
until someone got hurt.

when i was older,
wise and experienced,
i played pretend
so i could imagine my world was perfect.
games like these blinded me from everything
like shutters on windows.

when you apologize
i pretend it's fine
"don't worry,
it's okay!"
"it's my fault, not yours!"
"no big deal!"
"stop apologizing, it's alright!"

it's games like these that highlight our wishes and desires,
but lock up the truth and the facts
in a metal box
inside our small hearts.
