Kalani Hilliker, the school sweetheart, stood at her locker trying to pry her chemistry book from under her heavy math book.
Kalani was not the one to complain, so she kept her thoughts inside as she yanked and pulled at the heavy book.

Kalani look up to check the time on a wall clock stationed above the lockers, when she noticed Kendall Vertes, the schools most popular girl, coming her way. Kendall was never nice to Kalani, and she tried to stay away from her to avoid conflicts.

Kalani suddenly found the strength and yanked all her books a out, closing her locker door and beginning to walk away, when she was mercilessly shoved into the lockers.

"Watch yourself, Hilliker."
Snapped a sassy voice that could belong to none other that Kendall Vertes.

"Sorry, Kendall. I was just trying to get to class."
Said Kalani passively, keeping her head down.

"Don't talk to me, it's social suicide."
Hissed Kendall, making her clique of girls laugh.

"Okay, sorry. But I do like you shoes."
Remarked Kalani.

Kalani was a very sweet girl who was home an hour before her curfew, always did her homework, got all A's on report cards, and still slept with stuffed animals, although she's a sophomore in high school.

Kendall flashed her a evil glare.

"I don't know who you think you are, but this is my territory, and you play by my rules, understand?"

Remarked Kendall, slapping the books out of Kalani's hand and walking away, swishing her hair behind her.

Kalani sighed as she reached down and began collecting her things.

"Mind if I help?"
Asked a kind voice.

Kalani looked up to see a warm, brown face staring down at her.

The girl reached down and began putting all Kalani's spilled pencils back in her pencil case.

"Your Kalani, right? Kalani Hilliker?"
Asked the girl.

"Yes, I am. What's your name?"
Asked Kalani.

The girl smiled.
"My name is Nia. Nia Frazier."
She said.

Kalani smiled.

"Your name is pretty."
She said to Nia, who blushed.

"Same for you."
She replied.

Kalani studied herself with all her books, and Nia placed her pencil case on top of her book stack.

Nia smiled and stuck a sticky note onto Kalani's binder, with her name, text number, and a smiley face to seal it.

"If you want to text me."
Said Nia, walking off.

Kalani waved goodbye and headed off to her next class.
