Hurt

Steve and Lily having dinner after school soon turned into a nightly occurrence. Well, as long as Steve wasn't called away for Avenger duty. They grew closer (and started dating) and spent more time together until a day in May.
It was nearing the end of school and Lily was helping her students prepare for End of Year Exams. As she was walking home, as she was apt to do on very nice days, she saw Falcon flying at an angle toward her. She waved up at him and he waved back by wiggling his wings. A few seconds later, he touched down and quickly grabbed her and took off again.
"Whoa, Sam! Not cool!" She exclaimed as they flew higher. "What's wrong?" She yelled over the wind. "Cap's hurt." Those two words haunted Lily's nightmares and she felt the blood drain from her face. "What happened?" But Sam wouldn't answer her.
They flew to the Avenger Tower and rushed side by side down hallway after hallway to the room that JARVIS said that they could see Steve. They busted in a viewing room and saw doctors working frantically to keep the body on the table alive. "Steve, please..." Lily whispered as the heart monitor flat lined.
"Clear!" The doctor placed the paddles on Steve's chest but the monitor remained showing a flat line.
"Double the charge! Clear!"
This time his heart monitor kickstarted and resumed a steady beating. The doctor finally relaxed minutes later and took a few calming breaths.
"He'll be alright now. The serum will kick in." The body on the table arced as his lungs filled with air.
That evening, Lily and Sam sat with Steve as he was still recovering. Sam had fallen asleep but Lily couldn't bring herself to close her eyes. Every time she did, she saw Steve's body arc off the table.
But eventually the excitement of the day caught up with her then the next thing she knew was Steve intertwining their fingers.
"Hey," he croaked.
"Steve!" He winced at her voice and she whispered her apology. "You can't ever do that again! I thought I lost you."
"No promises." He looked over at Sam who was still sleeping. "Hey, Sleeping Beauty." Sam regained consciousness with a grunt.
"Hey, big guy. How you feeling?" Steve tried to sit up but winced and held his chest.
"I feel like I was run over by a truck then shot by six HYDRA guns." Sam laughed but soon stopped at the look on Lily's face.
"You were what?" She clipped out, eyebrow dangerously high and head tilted. At that minute, Tony walked in, saw Lily's angry face and turned around and left the room again. "Coward!" Steve called, then winced again. Lily's face lost some of its anger and was replaced with compassion.
