Ashley Black sat at the kitchen table eating her favorite cereal: fruit loops. It was 7:45 and her nerdy cousin Adam still wasn't here to pick her up. "Ugh! Where is he? We're going to be frickin late!" Her dad sat at the table with her and looked up at the sound her outburst. "Chill Ash. He'll be here." "Not frickin soon enough," she retorted. Her dad glanced up again, shook his head and went back to reading his magazine. She sighed and tried to calm herself. Just then a loud car horn blared from outside. "Finally," Ashley mumbled under her breath. She stood and slung her backpack over her shoulder. "Bye daddy. Tell mom I'm leaving. "Bye sweet heart. Have a good day. And please don't get into any trouble. You don't want your mother getting any more headaches." Ashley pushed her dark hair off my shoulders. "K." She spun around and nearly bolted out the door. She ran up to my cousin's shiny Nissan and slid in the front seat. "Hey Dork," she said while buckling in. Adam ignored her comment. "You ready?" he said as he adjusted the radio. "Yeah hurry up we're gonna be late." "Na really?" Adam retorted. She shot Adam a dirty look. He turned to face to road, shifted the gear into drive and started toward their school nearly 12 blocks from where Ashley lived. The radio was low but she could hear Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" playing. "Woooow," she said drawing the word out. "What? Taylor Swift is bae," Adam responded. "Don't let any of the guys hear you say that at school." "Please they already know and I've already gotten crap for it. But ya know what?" He paused and glanced at Ashley. She looked up. "What?" she asked. Adam smiled. "You just gotta Shake it off." She smiled slightly at his comment. Ashely did love puns. But she would never admit that. Adam turned into the school's parking lot which was full as always. He slid into a spot next to Derek Bidder's gigantic pick up truck and Joy Silvers' yellow Beatle Volgswagon bug. He killed the ignition and they both got out of the car almost simultaneously. It was 8:12 and the late bell rings at 8:15. "Come on Ash we gotta go. Let's run." She almost started to jog but then stopped short. "Wait!" She practically yelled. Adam looked back. "Do we have to run like humans?" Adam shifted his weight and thought for a moment." "No. We can't risk it. What if someone sees us." "No one's gonna see us. We'll be moving so fast the human eye won't catch us." She glanced at her Iphone. It read 8:13. "We got two minutes. Come on if we just ran..." "No. I'm not risking it." Ashley looked at him her mouth agape. Adam didn't budge. "Fine," she finally said. "We'll do it your way." Ashley glanced at her phone once again. But just to let you know, It's 8:14."

They were late. Mrs. Brewer was not happy. She gave them an annoyed look as they slowly tiptoed through class. "Make sure to copy down the homework assignment you two." Ashley could hear the annoyance in her English teacher's voice as she sat behind Adam. The look on Mrs. Brewers face indicated she was tired of them interrupting her class every time they showed up late. I mean who could blame her. I think I'd be annoyed too. If they had ran like she wanted to they would have been just on time. But Adam couldn't risk anyone seeing them. Please. What's the point of having alien powers if you couldn't use them? Smh. Ashley cracked open her notebook and begin to copy down the homework. God it was so long. They had to read Chapters 8-10 in The Scarlett Letter, answer questions 1-7 and write a short reaction essay to today's short video about Nathaniel Hawthorne. Ashley hated literature. Adam on the other hand lapped this sort of stuff up. He has tons of books written in the Romantic period. He loves poetry too. "Such a nerd" she thought. But he was a boy and just like any boy he couldn't keep his eyes off girls. Or one girl in particular. Kelsey Summers. Adam and Kelsey had been dating since their freshman year and two had been so in love ever since. Adam played with Kelsey's hair and whispered into her ear, making her giggle. "Alright class lets get into our documentary video about Nathaniel Hawthorne. Please take notes because you will need them for your reaction papers. Pay attention. No talking and no cell phones." Mrs. Brewer placed the DVD inside the player and turned off the lights. The film started and Ashley was already getting sleepy. She sat back in her chair and sighed. It was going to a long first period.
