"Hello ma'am, how can I help you?" he heard someone ask. Naturally, he didn't reply.
"Oh, crap. I'm so sorry." He heard the same voice, yet again and was tempted to turn. He found a girl staring at him wide-eyed. He cocked an eyebrow and she replied, "I meant sir, sir. I meant, how could I help you?"
Then, it struck him. He hadn't been mistaken for a woman so he had to assume that she hadn't seen him and naturally just began with ma'am. It wasn't surprising because Carter Lane had never expected to find himself in the feminine hygiene products aisle. Unfortunately, he had to do it because his thirteen-year-old sister would kill him if he didn't buy the required products since she was suffering from a case of menstruation and didn't want to get out of bed. Being the loving older brother, he had to buy it. It didn't mean he couldn't have fun while he was at it.
"What do you mean by ma'am? Can't you see that I'm all man?" he asked the poor girl who still looked like she was going to faint.
"I'm sorry, sir. It's just that men aren't the usual costumers we find in this section of the store," she replied. He almost expected her to stutter.
Oh well, not all girls can see the gorgeous man in front of them when they're scared for their life, he thought.
"Miss. Jane, I will let it go this time because I really do need your help," he told her. There was a sudden change in her demeanor at his words.
"This time? So, there is going to be a next time, sir?" She asked him, smiling just a little.
"I take it that menstruation is monthly occurrence so I think I will be coming here every month unless my sister takes pity upon me and lets me be," he said.
"Okay then. Let's make sure you're an expert by the time you're here for your next visit. Sir, does your sister prefer tampons or pads?"
"You can call me Carter, I'm only 17. Also, what are pads and tampons?" he replied. Alexa Lane was his only sister and his father, he was guessing, was not an expert on these products.
"Pads it is. Or do you want to confirm it with your sister?" she asked him, a grin plastered on her face. She looked like she was on the verge of laughing which annoyed and still intrigued him.
After hearing his sister laughing at him over the phone because he was so clueless, after getting her to stop laughing and tell him what she wanted, after looking at pink, purple, green, blue, yellow, red and orange coloured packs of pads, after hearing Freida Jane laugh about his surprise at figuring out what the sizes and wings meant and after finally choosing one pack, Carter decided that enough was enough. He was never coming back to buy pads again.
Until next month.
