Chapter 16

After Kyle made Sam leave, I got out of bed.

"Where are you going?" Kyle asked, sitting up, eyes still foggy with sleep.

"I'm going for a run," I said softly, bending down to kiss him.

Downstairs, I saw Eitan and Morgana curled up on the couch, watching cartoons. I smiled at them... my babies.

I stepped out the front door, shifted into my tiger, and ran.

Through trees, over rocks, past memories I didn't want to feel. I ran until my paws throbbed and my lungs ached.

I only stopped when I realized—I had no idea where I was.

Where in the world am I?

I lowered my head to sniff the ground, trying to get my bearings, when a howl pierced the air.

A howl of pure agony.

It came from the pack house.

I didn't think.

I shifted into a bird and took to the sky, heart slamming in my chest.

Smoke.

Flames.

No no no no...

The pack house was on fire.

Bodies lay scattered on the ground—some in wolf form, some not. Blood soaked the grass.

I shifted back to my human form mid-air and hit the ground running, screaming names.

"KYLE! EITAN! MORGANA!"

No answer.

I searched.

I screamed.

I tore through the wreckage for what felt like hours until I finally found him—

Kyle.

Tied up. Bloody. Barely conscious.

I dropped to my knees, sobbing, fumbling with the ropes as tears blurred my vision.

After two shaky minutes, I got him loose. He collapsed into my arms with a broken groan.

"Kyle," I choked. "Where are the kids? Where are they?!"

He opened his eyes slowly. There was pain... guilt... and something else I couldn't place. Relief?

Then he said the words that shattered my entire world:

"They... they took them. The kids were kidnapped."

Everything stopped.

The flames.

The noise.

The world.

And all that remained... was silence.
