It was a bright afternoon, and everyone in the Potter house had slept in late. The sun glistened through the window as the unnaturally quiet house burst to life.
"Mummy! Daddy! When do we get to go?! I can hardly wait!" James exclaimed as he ran through the door, with Albus trailing behind.
"As soon as you two pack your suitcases," Harry said with a chuckle. "C'mon, I'll help you." He stood up and walked off, but not after giving Ginny a kiss on the forehead.
In the boys' room, Harry helped Albus and James pack their belongings into bags. He took out his wand, and with a wave of his hand, the clothes floated into two neat piles, and into the bags.
"How did you do that?" Albus said with a gasp of excitement.
"A special spell," Harry said to the boys. "Don't worry, you'll learn it all soon. Hogwarts is where all the magic is learned." The boys giggled and ran off once again.
Later, once all the bags were packed and loaded up around the Portkey in the garden, the Potter house was ready to depart.
"Is everyone ready to go?" Ginny said, as Harry carried all her bags with a grunt.
"Yes!" James exclaimed with a smile.
"Mummy, where are we going anyway?" Albus said, tugging on the hem of his mother's dress.
"You'll see," Ginny responded. "All we have to do is wait for Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione." A few moments after, there was a CRACK, and Ron, Rose, and Hermione stood before them. They all shared hugs and hellos, and everyone grabbed their bags (excluding Ginny, whose bags Harry had to carry.)
"Kids, do you know what a Portkey is?" Hermione said as she kneeled down to face the kids. They all shook their heads.
"Well, once we all grab hold of it, it will take us where we need to go. Does that make sense?"
After the kids got an explanation, the Potters and Weasleys gathered around the old boot, and Hermione gave the countdown.
"Three!" Ron, Hermione, Harry, and Ginny grabbed on.
"Two!" Ginny beckoned for Albus and James to hold the Portkey. Rose grabbed the boot.
"One!" With a flash, the families disappeared, and they stood in a familiar shoppe, and the smell of Butterbeer flooded their noses.
"Um, this is our special family holiday?" Rose asked her mom, as Harry grabbed the boot, examining its enchantments.
"No, honey, this is not our holiday," Hermione explained. "There must be something wrong with the portkey. But don't worry, we'll fix it."
After several minutes, Harry set the old boot on the table, having fixed the enchantments. Ron chimed in and gave the final countdown.
"Three!" The family once again grabbed the boot and waited.
"Two!" As the family crowded around, Harry dropped his wand in the shuffling of bodies.
"One!" Rose and James inadvertently kneeled down to pick up Harry's wand in unison, as the rest of the family vanished.
As James and Rose stood up, they looked around.
"Uh, oh." James said with his jaw wide open.
"What just happened?!" Rose exclaimed, tears forming in her eyes.
This was not going to be an ordinary holiday.
