"Aria," came a voice from somewhere in the distance. I shook my head. I'm in Disneyland, I thought to myself. I'm in line for the Peter Pan ride with Annie and Hayley and Cale- wait.
"Aria! Wake up!" my best friend Brooklyn hissed loudly in my ear. I jolted upright, my hair flying wildly around my face, my elbow slamming into the corner of my desk.
"Ow," I moaned.
"Ah, Miss White has decided to come back to reality the painful way. Detention. No sleeping in class, dear," my history teacher said sternly. A few kids made oooooh noises, but one look from Mrs. Beacon and they shut up. I sighed and shrugged. The third detention this week, and it was only Tuesday. I fell asleep in class a lot, so what? My teacher did make me feel a bit hurt, but if you were me, you'd know that being patient is the only thing I do well.
"Today, as I was saying, we are going to be learning about ancient Egypt," announced Mrs. Beacon. I sat up in my chair a little higher at this. I absolutely loved history, besides the teacher who taught it, and Egypt was my favorite.
"I have some books on my desk, please feel free to take them to study for our upcoming quiz. Find a partner and choose a book," continued my teacher. Everyone in class got up and choose their friends. I immediately walked over to Brooklyn and we approached Mrs. Beacon's desk. One book caught my eye. It was brown and weathered, especially at the binding. Brooklyn caught where I was looking.
"No," was all she said. She knew I loved dated things, and this look 100 years old.
"Come on, let me enjoy myself," I whined to my friend.
"Nope," she replied.
"Mrs. Beacon, this is a good book, right?" I asked.
"Never read it," she responded. I sighed and looked at Brooklyn with what I hoped was pleading eyes.
"You take that book, I'll take a good one, and we'll have more research," said Brooklyn boredly. I nodded, grabbed the old book, and went back to my desk. As I opened it, something bizarre happened. The sound of chatter in the class got quieter and the room started getting fuzzy. I heard the sound of rushing water getting louder and louder. I'm gonna die! I'm DYING! I thought to myself in a panic. All of a sudden it stopped, and I was staring at the Nile River.
"Oh. My. Cows. Potatoes," I whispered. The book had dropped to my feet and was making noises. I swear I heard the book say 'Aria fainted!' I backed away from the book. It looked as if it was glowing, and getting dimmer and and dimmer. I turned away and ran.
The rushing water was really the Nile River, flowing North. I didn't seem to really acknowledge that, and just let the fact that a glowing book that talked took me to Egypt make me run. I followed it for a while before seeing a girl ahead of me.
"Hey! Hey girl!" I yelled. She turned toward me and stared. I ran fast in her direction. I hoped she could show me to the nearest airport.
"Wha-what are you?" she stammered. I stopped in my tracks. What am I? Then I looked at her properly. She wore a long robe-like dress with moccasins and a head turban. Her hair was black and reached the ground, and she was holding papyrus plants.
"What year is it," I asked, suddenly nervous.
"Um, do you mean the season? It is harvest season," she replied quietly. I stumbled back and tripped on a rock. I fell flat on my back, but didn't acknowledge it. I sat up as if I was a robot and shook my head.
"No, no, no-no-NO!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. Egypt was bad enough, but ancient Egypt? I layed back down.
"Are you alright, strange one? Where have they sent you from?" asked the girl.
