"How's Athena?" My aunt asked.
"Off doing her own thing. You know," my dad answered nonchalantly. He didn't seem to mind that my mom rarely visited us. Not like I did.
"And when was the last time her daughter saw her?"
"It's been a while," my dad sighed.
"Scott-"
"I know. I don't like it either, but that's her choice. She's got a better life than she had and if she's happy, then I'm happy for her."
"But what about her?" She asked probably talking about me. She never used my nickname because she 'couldn't.' She felt it was disrespecting the name my mother gave me, but I didn't care. As long as she didn't call me by my biological name, we were cool. "Don't you care that she's upset?"
"Of course, I care. That's why she's leaving with you. She's hated me ever since I told her I'm not her biological father and she's not happy here anymore. She needs a change of pace." I smiled slightly, loving that my dad finally understood. For months, he'd kept me from leaving not just for the summer but for the school year.
"Then what about you? Are you happy?"
"Not with her being so upset with me. I'd rather have her visit me every summer and live with you than have her stay here and be unhappy. I can't take it anymore."
"Well, I don't want to see that either so if she's not happy in Ohio, I'm sending her back."
"Fair enough." My dad didn't argue knowing my aunt could, and would, leave without me. My dad was the best parent I'd ever had or maybe I just called him that cause he was the only one I'd ever really know. I was still kind of in shock that he was letting me go. My mother, on the other hand, hadn't been here all week even though her youngest sister finally came to visit. She was probably too busy with her "secret work" that kept her away.
To be honest, I was happy to be leaving. I could probably make a new life in Ohio and never come back here. I had no friends, no boyfriend, no attachments. I had nothing here but my dad and my cousins. I would miss them, but I was ready to move on. My aunt finally started the car, but just before she drove away my dad ran up to my window.
"Here," he said handing me a notebook. "Write it all down for me, okay?" He walked away and I got out of the car and gave him a hug.
"I love you, baby," He said, kissing my forehead.
"I love you too, dad." I got back in the car and waved goodbye as my aunt drove away. A tear rolled down my cheek, but I quickly whipped it away. I breathed the smell of fresh, free air, and watched as my house got smaller and smaller until it was lost on the horizon.
