Spencer's Kickboxing GymI walked in through the through the big double doors of my second home. A lot has changed since last I was in here and I also saw a lot of new faces and even new equipment.
"Holy shit. Kate?"
I turned my attention towards the voice and I immediately felt a warm smile come across my face.
"Spencer!" I screamed, taking him into a bear hug.
"Let me go!" He choked from under me while I chuckled on excitement.
We had attracted a lot of attention from the other people in the gym. Some faces were surprised and some were utterly confused.
Spencer has changed in the past eleven years. He had black hair styled up in a quiff, but now he has dirty blonde dreadlocks.
"What?" He asked.
"Nothing. Just..your new look. I like it," I chuckled.
"Oh," he laughed. "I'm glad you do. Check, I also got a new tattoo you would like," he said while fishing out his phone out of his pocket.
Moments later he showed me a picture of the letters J.K tattooed on one of his bicep.
"I got it a month after your sentencing. It could stand for both Jessica Knowsley or Johnson Kate-"
"Or Just Kidding," I joked. "I love it Spence. Thank you,"
I handed him back his phone and my thoughts drifted to Jessica and how much I missed her, especially now when I didn't know what to do with myself. Or how I'm going to start with finding the real person
"So how has the gym been since I left?"
"Well the first three months were a major kick to finances. We lost a lot of the younger students. But after your trail we got a lot more adults on board and everything is back on track."
We walked towards the ring he was working in and the people around it stared at us as we walked. "That's good then," I replied, ignoring the stares.
"Have you still got it Kat," I heard a voice from behind me.
I did a slow turn and I was surprised to see Mirijana standing behind me...in training clothes.
"Mirijana?" I asked in shock.
"The one and only," she said before giving me a hug.
"Oh my word. This is crazy. I just ran into your brother like ten minutes ago," I told her.
"Oh. Yeah," I don't know if I was imagining things, but her expression changed from excited to..hurt and regretful. I didn't even know that was possible until now.
I dismissed the thought as some sort of weird hallucination. "When did you join the gym?"
"I can't even tell you. It was so long ago. But I think it was around three months after your sentencing. I do stand to be corrected."
"Why don't you show me what you have learnt these past eleven years," I said to her while motioning to the ring.
"Care to join?" She smirked at me.
"I smell a challenge?" Spencer hollered.
"I don't know. I am a bit rusty around the edges," I joked.
"Let's make it easier for you then. Why don't we first start with the punching bag?"
We laughed at her proposal but still got ready for the exercise.
Once Mirijana and I got in the ring, she started off well with simple punches and kicks at the punching bag.
"Is that the best you can do?" I asked her jokingly.
"Are you gonna let Kate talk to you that way?" Spencer stirred from outside the ring.
Mirijana let out an amused laughed but kept at the same pace.
"In order to be able to kick the ass of a champion, you have to actually try Miri," Spencer once again shouted to her.
"Spencer just watch. I know what I'm doing," she chuckled.
She ignored his taunts and carried on with what she was doing.
"Your phone is ringing again Mirijana."
Mirijana didn't stop her punches and kicks at punching but instead she just asked. "Who is it?"
"Your brother."
She momentarily paused and her facial expression changed from joy to bitterness. She suddenly started punching again, but harder this time.
"Woah, you okay?" I asked with concern.
She didn't answer my question but instead she just punched and kicked harder.
I knew that feeling. She wasn't punching hard because of some stupid bet. Someone had infuriated her and she was trying to let go of all the rage. Strangely, in that moment, I saw myself in her fifteen years ago when I first stepped into this ring. I remember that day all too well.
Mirijana didn't stop throwing kicks and punches, in fact, she got faster. Whatever her brother did, it pissed her off. She was starting to strain herself. You could see it in her eyes.
"Mirijana, you have to stop now. Seriously, did you even eat today?" I asked.
She didn't respond to me and I looked over at Spencer who just shrugged his shoulders.
"Mirijana come on," I reason with her. "You look like you are about to pass out any second now-"
"Just hold the bag, Johnson," she cut me off.
A few punches later and she was on the ground.
Her brother finally had worn her out with just a simple call that wasn't even answreed
Boring yet important chapter.
