Chapter 5

“One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.” Paulo Coelho

“Mace, the breaks! The breaks!” Nathan was yelling at me, as I drove around fast.

“Don’t scare her! She’s doing great!” Jay told Nathan, then he looked at me and said “You’re doing great, baby sis”

“I got that part” I laughed feeling happier than ever. “You really think so?” I turned sideways to face him

“Yeah, I…” He started but Nathan screamed at me

“Eyes on the road!!”

“Okay, now you can hit the breaks, kid.” Jay said and when I did he ordered Nate out of the car “You, out, now”

“What? Why?”

“She’s doing fantastic, and you can’t stop your comments.”

“Tell me that when she lands in the hospital tonight”

“Uh-oh, I think someone cares too much” I teased him

“I care about her safety as well, but I also want to turn her into a race car driver. Maybe she’d drift one day, who knows.”

“You would seriously let her?”

Jay sighed “Nath, get out already”

“No, let me try to teach her well, you get out.”

“Fine, let’s see you give it a try” Jay stepped out and Nathan sat next to me upfront.

Before I started to drive again, I looked at him once and then I checked my mirrors.

I suddenly felt unnerved. I wanted him to get out. I wanted my brother next to me in the car. I forgot how to even turn the car on. I looked at him again, once more.

“That’s the second time, Mace.” I jumped in my place at him words.

“I’m just waiting for you to put your seatbelt on.” I lied and it sounded pretty convincing.

“Good job on noticing that. I’m impressed”

“Thank you.” I smiled big, and he smiled, too. “Did you have braces before as a kid?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“No one has natural perfect teeth unless they’ve had braces”

“Did you have braces?”

“Nope”

“Still perfect.”

“Trying to flirt with me?”

“I’m just proving your theory wrong”

“Oh okay.” I felt the need to laugh out loud. I looked at my brother from the window and he was talking on the phone, smiling like a goof.

“He should just tell her.” I murmured.

“How’d you know he was speaking to Alexis?”

“You said Alexis, when all I said was ‘her’ so you know more than I do.”

“You know as much as I do.”

“It’s all over his face and that smile… he’s so in love with her.”

“And you think he should tell her?”

“Of course!”

“I think he shouldn’t”
