Chapter 8

“I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.” John green

“Where did you find it” Mrs. Carter started off all viscously

“Find what exactly?” Meaghan put a hand on me as to keep me from saying a word.

“My son’s acceptance letter to the local university!” She raised her voice

“Oh, you threw it away? We just thought it got lost between all the hustle.” My sister kept her cool all through, and Nathan’s mom was about to blow her top.

“What gives you the idea that you could mess with my son’s future?” She was yelling directly at me now.

“Whoa, I’m in charge here, you talk directly to me or you don’t talk at all, Mrs. Carter.” I detected the least shift of tones in Meaghan’s soft and calm voice.

“But I want to hear it from Macy’s mouth. Why? Why would you do it?”

I took a deep breath before answering “I care about him”

“That’s funny, because when you care about someone you’re willing to do what’s best for them.”

“And you think what’s best for Nathan is going away to a whole new place, and ripping him away from his friends and family? ’Cause if that’s what you do when you care about someone, then it’s good to know.”

“You have a mouth on you two. Where does your mother stand on that case?”

“I’m sorry Mrs. Carter, but you come to our house, UNINVITED, and start harassing my little sister, who’s got nothing to do with this whole situation…” Meaghan started to get meaner by the second and was interrupted by Mrs. Carter

“Nothing to do with the whole situation…?”

“Excuse me! Let me finish!” Meaghan raised her hand up “Yes, nothing to do with the situation, because your son told my sister that if he can’t go to this particular uni, then he won’t go to uni at all. So I think we actually helped your son get an education.”

“You think you’re so smart…”

“I know for a fact I’m smarter than you. For now I’d appreciate if you leave us alone, we have better things to do other than lead an argument with you, that won’t take you anywhere useful. Please take your baggage and deal with it at home, with your husband and child, or I’m gonna have to personally kick you out.”

I wanted at that moment to jump up and down and hug Meaghan. The amount of pride I held for that young lady was impeccable. When it came to me or Jay, I knew she’d slaughter cold heartedly to protect us. That’s what big sisters do.

“Shame on you! I’m so disappointed in Bethany. She didn’t know how to raise you well. Either one of you.” Mrs. Carter blew up.

“I’m actually disappointed in you, because you’re single handedly trying to ruin your son’s future. He pursued Macy, and not the other way around. Until this point if you rip them apart she won’t fudge and he’ll be devastated. So I dare you to try. For now, good bye.”

“We’ll see…”

“I said… Good bye.” Meaghan practically shoved her out the door with all coolness, and she didn’t even raise her voice once. That was what pushed people over the edge with Meaghan. She kept her cool no matter what the situation is, while people burst into flames of fury, anger, and rage. “She’s a she-devil!”

It took me a few seconds to respond to that “Meaghy, why doesn’t she like me at all?”

“Every person in town knows you ended up in the psych ward twice. The news spread fast in this town, and in her defense she’s protecting her son.”
