Hurt Me Twice

Chapter 1  

About 4 years ago, I was sitting under a tree, like a total nerd reading about DNA coding, when my best friend, Lane and my brother’s best friend Nathan came by and sat next to me.

“what do you guys want?” I asked not looking up from my text book

“come on you little geek, we're going for ice cream” Lane said

“yeah. But don’t you have classes?”

“we do, but little miss aggressive here wouldn’t leave me alone.” Nathan teased her

“shut it, you love me” Lane smiled nudging him

“you know I do”

I closed my text book, and looked at them till they realized I was waiting for them to get going.

I got in the front seat next to Lane and closed the door.

“for real? In the back princess” Lane motioned for me to get in the back seat.

“no it’s okay, she can sit up front” Nathan offered me his place.

“what a gentleman, thank you” I faked a smile at him and Lane put the radio as high as it could go to a song I can’t remember but what I do recall is that it was the most annoying song ever, so I changed the channel.

“NO!” Lane found the song again

“you no!, it’s annoying like you face!”

“I like it!” she objected.

“NO!”

“Lane it’s fine. Put on the song she wants” Nathan interfered.

“listen to the gentleman in the back, missy”

"you're not very normal, are you?" Nathan tried to tease me

"the world would be a much better place if you keep your mouth shut" I rolled my eyes at him

"you don't like me much, do you?"

"wow, Nathan, you don't miss a thing!"

"hate is a choice... Walk away from it" Lane sang out her words as a kids chant.

At the ice cream shop I stayed outside with Nathan as Lane went in the crowded little shack to get us the ice cream we ordered. That’s when the school’s hottest girl walked by, Allison, cheer captain. She has boys lining up just to get a “hi” from her and she wants no one but Nathan. Everyone talks about how no one is good enough for her but the gorgeous grey eyed, light brown hair with golden matrix which is still a mystery, like why is there more than one natural color in that beautiful head of his? Nathan is sexy I’d be a freak to say otherwise, but I didn’t like him at all, and every chance I get, I hit him with my best attempt of a snarky sarcastic shot. He’d always laugh it off as say I’m cute for trying. I hated that.

I was staring at her and he followed my gaze. “Mace, don’t say one word” he warned me before she came up to us and smiled “hey, Nate” but her smile faded when she looked at me “Chem freak”

“what do you want, Allison?” I asked nonchalantly.

“cut your hair, your split-ins are horrendous”

“I’ll do that right after you get a life as to notice things other than silly things, let’s say you’re missing a chromosome, I feel sad for you”

Nathan smirked and she cleared her throat. “Wow, Nate, I didn’t know you babysat?”

He looked at her and put his hand on mine, trying to intertwine our fingers “we were just leaving, right Mace?”

“Yeah, Lane’s here” I waved at her and we walked away to our car. “that was so cool! Thank you!” I jumped up and down clapping.

He pinched my cheek and laughed.

“hurry up, your ice cream is starting to melt” Lane was already going through hers, we joined her in the car and laughed a bit as we told her what happened with our interesting encounter with Ally.

Later that night Nathan and my brother Jay were going out to meet with their friends for a “study group” but we all know they’re not going to study

“come with?” Nathan invited me

“no thanks, your brother called me to go over and watched a movie”

“so you’d hang out with Jamie, but not me?”

“pretty much, pretty boy” I joked.

“ouch” he put his hand over his chest as to motion to how it hurts “my heart”

“no, just your pride”

He laughed out loud “wow, Macy, when did you grow up?”

“want me to drive you over to Jamie’s house?” my brother said grabbing his car keys.

“I can drive her.” Nathan suggested.

“thank you, but Jamie’s picking me up.”

“okay. Well be safe, princess” I hugged my brother and he kissed my head.

“study hard” I said as they walked out the door.

I wasn’t even going to Jamie’s house, I just said it for no apparent reason, maybe just to see how Nathan would react?

I didn’t have any sort of feelings for him, but I liked the idea of him. He gave my lots of attention and he seemed to be genuinely interested in everything I say and do… that’s when I got a text from Lane

“Mate, what have you done to Nathan? He’s so into you!”

I gave it a little giggle before I texted her back “I didn’t do anything!”

“yeah you did! He said you’re charming… Careful he doesn’t joke around, so don’t let your frozen soul to mess with him”

I didn’t reply to that but instead started wondering what is it about me that he found charming, in school everyone thought I’m a freaky geek, an outcast. A total turn off.
