I arrive home a bit later to find mum at the island bench, eating some ice cream.
"Hi mum," I say as I put my beach bag on the bench near her and walk over to the fridge. I pull out a bottle of spring water and lean over the counter, facing mum. She looks up at me, seeing the smile on my face.
"Somebody's happy," she says, taking in another mouthful of ice cream.
"Yeah, I am," I reply and take a sip of water.
"I really don't know you anymore, do I?" Mum asks. I shake my head and she continues.
"I really should spend more time with you. How's..." Mum counts the days off her fingers "Friday night?"
"Oh," I sigh "Sorry. I forgot to tell you that I've got plans."
Mum stands up and carries her bowl over to the dishwasher and put it in. She closes the door and leans her hip on the bench. "Really? With who?"
How can I tell her that a celebrity is taking me out? I give it my best shot. "His name's Cody. I met him at the beach this afternoon."
Mum frowns as if she's trying to remember something. "What's his last name?"
I sigh again. "Simpson."
Mum moves away from her position on the bench and puts her hands on my shoulders. "Cody Simpson, eh? Sounds good." She turns me around and brightens when she sees my face; the same face that I had before. "Oh honey, is that look a look of love?"
"Mum!" I cry.
Mum puts her hand on her hip and gives me a bored expression. "Okay!" I put my hands in the air as I back away from the bench "I like him."
Mum gives a confused look again. "Isn't Cody Simpson an Australian singer from here?"
Great. She's caught me. "Yes," I reply.
Mum comes towards me excitedly. "Don't tell me this Cody is a celebrity!" She squeals, putting her hands on my shoulders again.
"He is, and he's Chelsea's celebrity crush, so I shouldn't do this to her." Mum backs away, suddenly saddened. "Oh honey."
"I know, I know," I say quickly, making my way for the bottom step of the stairs. I plonk myself down there. Mum doesn't even know about my nightmares yet. It's time I told her
Mum sits herself down next to me and hooks her arms around my waist. I let a few tears fall for no reason. "Last night, I had a dream. Two dreams, actually, though they were really nightmares. There was a blonde guy in there named Cody, who's face was completely blurred. I thought it was a dream trying to tell me something, though I didn't think I'd find the answer so soon. When I saw him today, and his eyes caught mine, I knew that he was the one in my nightmare." I let the last few tears fall. "Chelsea is so in love with this celebrity that she would literally kill me if I ever dated him."
Mum lets go of me and looks into my eyes. "Oh, Jess." Her face is sad. "If you really like this guy, then tell Chelsea that. She'll understand."
I climb a couple of steps and turn around. "I hope she will. As much as I love her a friend, I love this guy as well; and I've only met him once. I've barely heard his music."
Mum walks up to the step below me. "Do you want to talk about this?" She asks me. I shake my head and the final few tears left. "Homework?" Mum asks. I nod.
"Got a load of assignments today. Guess that's what you can expect in year ten." I turn back around and walk upstairs to my bedroom, completely forgetting that I even left my beach bag on the bench.
