Stevie looked out over the ocean, darkness surrounding when all she could see was the distant lights from the boats still out there, masked by the fog of the light rain coming down outside. She snuggled into her plush day bed, awaiting her husbands return. He said he would be home at eight and as she heard the big grandfather clock in the middle of the lounge room tick over to twelve she began to worry. Slightly weary but insistent on being awake when he returned, she sauntered into the kitchen and put the kettle on to make a cup of tea, she lit up a few candles and began writing in her journal, thinking about her husband and how he always stayed out late, leaving her at home by herself she watched the rain drops race each other down the window sill and began writing
Now here you go again
You say, you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down?
"Just your wife and mother of your child" she thought to herself. Annoyed and slightly worried she picked up the phone and dialled the studio. In her weary state the dial tone of the phone nearly put her to sleep, when the soft voice of the studio receptionist brought her back to life "Hello, Sound City studios, how can I help you?"
"Oh Madge your still there there! It's Stevie"
"Oh hey Stevie how are you?"
"I'm ok, is Don still around?"
"No, they all took off about an hour ago sorry Steves." The receptionist replied in a sympathetic tone, this wasn't the first time Stevie had been left all night with no word from her husband.
"Hey that's ok he's probably just stuck in traffic." Stevie chuckled trying and assure Madge that her marriage was fine and her husband was always loyal, even though both women knew the drive from their house to the studio was only about 20 minutes with traffic.
There was a silence over the phone until it was broken by Madge
"Oh well I guess I'll see you round the studio, see ya Stevie!" She tried to sound uplifting to try and take attention away from where they both knew Stevie's husband was.
"Yeah see you, Madge."
She hung up the phone with an exasperated sigh how did it get like this? She thought to herself how did my life go from fame and fortune, to waiting on a lying husband and dirty nappies? She had to admit it was her fault, she should have known that marrying Don was a bad idea. Sure she loved him, but it was more of a love she had because of how much he helped her change her life and the daughter he gave her, but she didn't love him the way a woman should love her husband, the way she loved Lindsey... Damn, no Stevie don't go there, you made your decision and so did he, why can't you let him go? But that's the way it had always been, no matter how many times she told herself, and on occasions her husband, that she was over Lindsey, she just couldn't escape memories of looking into his ocean blue eyes, tasting his lips, feeling his arms roaming her body... Jesus Stevie pull your self together, your a mother for Christ sake! She had enough of waiting so she just decided to go to bed, she showered and changed then went to check on her sleeping daughter. Sara slept soundly in her cot in the corner of her room filled with teddies and all things pink and fluffy. Stevie couldn't resist the urge so she sneaked over and brushed her short curls away from her face and gave her a kiss on the forehead before whispering "sweet dreams, precious girl" Sara rolled over in her sleep and mumbled something incoherent and Stevie softly chuckled, knowing her daughter was in the midst of her dreams and nothing would wake her.
She quietly made her way back to her bedroom and flopped down on the bed, falling into a deep sleep almost instantly. Until, she was woken a few hours later by loud footsteps and banging cupboards downstairs. He was home.
