Chapter 7
After my major freak out session that lasted about two months, I finally realised that moping around wouldn't bring him back and certainly wouldn't be what he wanted. The funeral was arranged for the next day and his parents and I were finally going to meet. We had spoken over the phone and arranged everything. We decided to wear white instead of black and celebrate his life rather than mourn over his death.
I hadn't said his name since that horrible night. I referred to him as he rather than saying his name.
I found that every time I said his name it would feel like I had been stabbed in the heart. Everyone thought I was doing really well, coping well, but in actual fact I just couldn't feel anything. After a week of feeling every emotion possible, I just couldn't feel anything.
School the next Monday was hectic. I got to fourth period not listening to what our teacher was saying. He was droning on about the Middle Ages when Emmy ran out of the room holding her big, pregnant belly with both hands.
By this point in the year she was nearly due. About a week. Dakota and I exchanged a worried glance and ran out of the classroom after her with the teacher yelling for us to come back, not that we listened. We ran into the bathroom after Emma. I could hear her cussing.
"Emmy, what the hell was that all about?" I panted, annoyed that she made us run halfway around the school just so she could pee.
"Don't you dare get pissed with me. My waters just broke! You, compared to me at the moment, have no right to be pissed right now." she yelled over the cubicle door. Dakota's mouth dropped. She snapped out of the inside freak out she was having in her head quickly and walked over the cubicle door, banging violently on it.
"Emily Marcellin, come out now. I seem to be the only one not freaking out now," Dakota said, seeing the expression on my face and taking in that I was worried.
"What the hell do we do?" I asked, quietly. Dakota threw me her keys.
"We stay calm. Soph, I want you to tell Mr. Greenly and then meet us at the car. We need to get to the hospital ASAP. I'm going to help Emmy... Clean up." she continued, authority laced in her voice. I nodded and ran back to our classroom.
As soon as I got to the classroom Isabelle stood up and sauntered over to me.
"what was all that about?" she asked, chewing gum. Completely ignoring her, I said,
"Sir," he looked over and seeing the expression on my face and the fear in my eyes he understood what was going on, excused me, and continued writing on the board.
"what's going on?" Issy asked, popping her gum at me. I gave her my best 'duh!' look and her face dropped.
"Go to Dakota's car and get out the GPS and plan it in to the closet hospital which I think is Princess Mary's. I've got to tell Connor. Oh joy! This’ll be fun!" I threw her Dakota's keys and ran out of the room and towards the science block.
I tried being calm but it didn't work very well. I walked into the classroom and over to Connor's bench top.
"Hey Soph." Nat chirped.
"Connor, I kinda need you to stop dissecting a frog so I can talk to you without throwing up." I said, turning away.
"Sure, one second. I just need to wash my hands." he said, clearly happy that he'd been cutting up a frog. He took off his gloves and walked over to the sink. He washed his hands thoroughly.
"It's Emmy." I said quickly.
"What's happened?" he said concerned.
"Her waters broke during History. About five minutes ago. Dakota's in the toilet with her." He turned off the tap and looked at me.
"What? You mean she's going to go into labour soon?" he asked, fear dancing in his eyes.
"Well, yeah, basically. What it means is that we've got to get to the hospital. But it's going to be okay and-" I stopped talking as Connor sprinted out of the room and towards the car park. Man, he was fast! He grabbed his keys out of his pocket and opened the car door. I ran after him.
"You getting in or what?" he asked, starting the car. I got in, riding shotgun, and he drove off.
