Chapter 10
I looked over myself in the mirror, took a deep breath and opened my bedroom door walking out into the hallway. I saw Will at the bottom of the stairs. She looked lovely and her date, Jenna, looked very nice as well. Will grinned at me.
“That dress is awesome. I want it.” She whined jokingly. I laughed at her.
“You guys look great.” I complimented. They smiled at me. I walked outside in my gorgeous pink heels that matched my dress with Will and Jenna following behind me. I opened the limo door that was parked in our driveway and saw Hayden, Connor, Emmy and Issy smiling at me. I returned the smile and jumped in next to Issy.
“Hurry up guys, we need to pick up Dakota soon or she’ll be pissed. You know what she’s like.” Connor winked. We laughed and joked around as the limo set off.
We got to Riverview and everything looked amazing. There were banners and things that looked like the paper chains that you make in Kindy. I smiled and looked over to my friends. I saw the amazed look on their faces as their eyes set sight on the hall. We walked toward the door and could hear music blasting from the speakers. As we got closer we could see couples dancing and people singing along to the songs that played. It was pretty awesome. But there was one thing missing and I think everyone else seemed to notice his absence as well.
As everyone had a date and was dancing, I couldn’t help but feel a bit jealous. If only he was here...
About half way through the dance I got tired of sitting and watching all my friends enjoy their evening with their dates. I gave up on the idea that any one was going to ask me and decided to leave early. I walked slowly over to Willow who was getting a drink, my eyes on the floor.
“Hey, you enjoying it? I defiantly am!” she said.
“Yeah, I’m really enjoying sitting by myself and watching everyone dance with each other.” I said sarcastically. She clearly didn’t get the sarcasm that was laced into my voice.
“Are you alright? You seem kinda peed.” She said, sounding concerned. I rolled my eyes.
“Does it seem like I’m annoyed? I wonder why? I’m just peachy.” I said, starting to get annoyed with her. “I’m going to go home now. I’m going to grab a cab, don’t worry about me.” I walked away. I had been there well over two hours and none of my friends had even said a word to me. They were too busy playing tongue hockey with each other to worry about their sad old friend that had no date. I was annoyed... okay, I was majorly pissed. I opened my gold purse when I got outside and grabbed my Samsung, calling a cab.
The cabbie arrived quickly. I jumped in, told the cabbie my address and pulled my seatbelt over me. He mumbled something but I didn’t know what he said. He sped out of the school, completely ignoring the speed limit. I suddenly got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I pushed it away though. He was giggling stupidly and swerving all over the road. My heart went into overdrive as I took in the thought that the driver was drunk.
The person driving a car that I was in was very drunk and may well have been the person who hit the love of my life with a car and killed him. A tear flung itself down my cheek as I recalled that night. The cab suddenly swerved, pulling me to my senses. The cab almost hit a lamppost. I screamed.
“STOP THE CAB!” I yelled, making him hold his ears. The cab swerved again before it screeched to a stop. I got out, shaking. “You stupid son of a bitch! Go get sober! You could’ve killed us both!” I yelled. He rolled his eyes at me and held out his hand, asking for money. He took a deep breath then breathed out. I could smell the strong alcohol coming from his mouth. I almost gagged. He stretched out his hand again. “You think I’m giving you money? You almost killed me!” I snapped, my heart beating a mile a minute. I stormed off, not looking back at the drunk idiot that was sitting in the cab.
At that moment, I realised that I lived about a 2 hour walk from where I was standing in the freezing cold. I shivered as the cold breeze hit me.
Then, a sparkling red Honda stopped next to me and the window on the passengers’ side was rolled down. Sitting in the drivers’ side was a hot guy in a black fitted tee and black jeans. He was really hot! Soph! Don’t think like that. What would Matt think?
“Hey, do you need a lift? I saw you yelling at your cabbie. What did he do?” he asked.
“He was drunk.” I answered rudely. I didn’t have time to talk to hot strangers, I needed to get home.
“Well, do you want a lift?” he asked, ignoring my rudeness. I thought about it. I could either risk dying of hyperthermia by walking home in the dark or I could catch a ride with a possible psycho killer. Hmm, decisions, decisions.
“Sure, a lift would be great.” I said slowly. I told him my address and jumped in. Who cares if I got kidnapped and killed? I had nothing else to live for.
“What’s with the pink dress and the cute ballet flats?” He asked.
“I was just at my formal. Decided to leave early.” I replied. He raised his eyebrows but didn’t ask any more questions.
“I’m James, by the way.” He said, looking over at me and holding out his hand.
“Sophia.” I smiled, shaking his hand. He turned the corner onto my road and stopped outside my house. I’m kinda glad I picked possible psycho killer to death by hyperthermia. “Thanks, James.” I said. I got out of the car and walked to the door.
“Anytime, Sophia.” He said, pulling out of the driveway and driving off. I got into the house and threw my keys on the side. I ran up the stairs pulling my dress off and throwing it to the side. I slipped on my tigger pyjamas. I flopped onto the bed and fell asleep instantly.
I heard someone trying to talk to me. I tried to mumble a ‘go away’ but it didn’t come out. I opened my eyes to find someone standing next to my bed, staring down at me.
“Bumblebee.” He said.
“Matt!” I said, throwing myself into his arms.
