Chapter 13

After kicking James out and going to visit Matt at the cemetery I decided to go back to bed. I had a really bad hang-over and needed to sleep. I fell into bed with a thump, my head resting on the other side if the bed from the pillow but I was too lazy and too tired to move.

I stand in front of Jim’s Diner looking at Sophia as she talks. Gosh, she looks so beautiful. She lets go of my hand and takes a step into the road. I hesitate.

I can’t do this! I’m a coward. I need to tell her. She needs to know. Maybe she’ll never want to see me again. Am I moving too quickly? I am interrupted by the screeching of tires. I look down the long straight road to see a very familiar red car. James? As far as I can see, he has a set look on his face. Does he know I’m here? Is he going to try and hurt me? And now? Is he going to hurt Bumblebee? The car keeps getting closer as I stand still on the roadside. I can’t move. I’m stuck. My feet are refusing to move. Crap! Matt, get a grip! Car tyres screech again and I look down the road to see the red car far too close. I jump out of my startled daze and ran into the road as Sophia looks back at me.

“Bumblebee move!” I yell. I reach Soph just in time and push her out of the way of the car. I feel the car collide with my body and everything went black.

I can feel Bumblebee stroking my hair as I slowly open my eyes. I see people crowded around us. I turn to look at Bumblebee but a sharp pain stabs all over my body and I scream. It hurts so bad! But I have to stay strong or Soph will freak out. I need to be strong.

"It's okay, baby. I'm here. I'm here, darling. I love you, I'm here." I hear her say as I also catch the conversations of people around us.

"the driver must have been drunk..."

"I can't believe he didn't stop..."

"... look at the poor boy, this is so sad..."

I try to put the excruciating pain to the back of my mind as I wonder if James intended to hurt me or hurt Sophia to get to me? I didn’t think he was this low! We’ve had our disagreements but when he moved town I assumed that had all been left behind. Ambulance sirens shrill and I close my eyes and sink into Sophia’s lap. I can’t be badly hurt. Tonight is our night. I’m going to ask her to her my wife! Nothing will stop me. Nothing. I hear the sirens stop and I am pulled from Bumblebee’s lap. I grind my teeth together as pain rubs up and down my body again.

“Sophia?” I called to her. I heard a gasp and she reaches for my hand. Holding it tightly but gently.

"You better not die, young man, because that would be the worst break up ever!” typical Bumblebee to turn a horrible situation into a funny one. I laugh but wince in pain. Sophia notices. “Sorry, sorry. Don’t you die or I swear...” I know why she hesitated. She didn’t know how to finish that sentence. I wouldn’t if I were in her position.

We arrived at the hospital within 2 minutes of leaving. The stretcher and I are pulled roughly to the ground and I am being rushed inside.

“Bumblebee?” I call. If I don’t make it through I want her to know how I feel.

“I'm here. Everything is going to be fine, baby. Just fine."

"Bumblebee, I-" Want you to be my wife and have my kids! I want to live an amazing life and I want to life it all through with you. Every memory, every moment. Together. Forever. I am cut off by being rushed inside and the Emergency Room doors slamming behind us.

My eyes flew open and I looked around to find me in my room. On my bed.

“Oh God, not another one.” I had been having numerous dreams about Matt since that very first one where he asked me to marry him but this one was horrible. I had experienced the crash scene from Matts’ view point.

“wait, wait, wait a minute!” realisation dawned on me. Matt knew his killer. He thought that the killer was trying to hurt him by hurting me! Who would do that? A psycho?  I had only ever had one nightmare at a time so I decided to take another nap as I had nothing planned and I was still extremely tired from my late night. I closed my eyes and drifted in a deep sleep.

“Mummy!” Jasmine calls to me as the front door opens. I pull her into a hug.

“How was your day, honey?” I ask as Rachel, Jasmine’s twin,  walked in with my gorgeous husband. He looks exactly as he did 7 years ago when we first met at the Orchid Lounge. Ah, memories!

“It was really great. Daddy bought us another 3 skirts and some… what are they called daddy?” she asks her dad innocently. I send a glare in Matts’ direction. He knows he’s not meant to spoil the girls. He coughs gently.

“Jumpsuits.” He says quietly.

“That’s right! Jumpsuits!” she says, pointedly.

“And hello you.” I say as the girls run up the stairs to their bedroom. I pull him into a kiss and remember why I fell in love with him.

“Not again!” I screamed. A future with Matt with 2 kids? Screw life! Sleeping officially sucked. Not that I did anything other than have nightmares. I needed to try to stop these dreams. I decided to be extremely stupid and give James a call. We agreed to meet at the Orchid Lounge and get drunk together.

When that time came I arrived at the Orchid Lounge and found James by the bar already consuming alcohol. He was clearly already drunk. I got a beer and downed it.

“You know, when I was five, I visited my cousin and… and I pissed the bed!” he burst into a fit of childish giggles. He then proceeded to tell me about his whole life story. My ears pricked when he started talking about this guy, Matt. It couldn’t be the same person but I couldn’t help but actually start to listen. This Matt guy was a real rebel. Got in trouble with the police a lot. For things like speeding to burning down the school office and several other building including the science labs that proceeded to blow up from the chemicals that lay inside. Apparently, James’ girlfriend cheated on him with this ‘Matt’. They had been going out since playgroup. This hit James hard and he has been trying to hurt Matt like he felt the hurt when he walked in on them… doing stuff in his room.

“One day I came back to town and saw him outside that new restaurant with some hot chick in a pink dress. I sped up in my car and was about to hit her when the damn idiot jumped in the way! I killed him but I am still upset that he didn’t get to feel the way I felt. That stupid son of a bitch!” what? James killed Matt? Shit! I pulled an arm back and swung it in the direction of the motor mouth that just admitted to killing the man who haunts my dreams. He fell to the floor and my hand stung like hell. “Screw you, James. You deserve to die in a hole.” I said, unable to come up with something better to say. I turned and walked out of the club before almost drowning in my own tears as I crawled up in a ball outside the backdoor.
