Kageyama woke up.
His head felt thick and heavy, like it was stuffed full of cobwebs.

He became aware of the painful stiffness in his neck and that he was sitting up on a bed, back against a wall. Judging by the blurry impression of his room, it was morning. His arm was asleep and he couldn't move it. His legs were cramped and he could feel something on them. He looked down to see a fuzzy orange blur in his lap.

A cat?

Shaking his head he rubbed his other hand over his eyes, scrubbing the sleep away.
Blinking again he saw that this was, in fact, not his room. And that the fuzzy orange blur was, in fact, Hinata clinging to his arm, head in his lap.

Hinata? Why am I hear?

Then it felt as if someone had taken a lit match to the cobwebs to his brain and his grogginess vanished in an instant. Kageyama stared at Hinata with new eyes. The sunlight from the window hit Hinata's hair making it shimmer beautifully.

This person right here...is a ghoul? How did I get here again?

He finally noticed the dull stinging in his arms and saw that the skin and been scrapped off them. How did this happen?

He tried to rein in loose memories.

I carried Hinata on my back because he was exhausted and I finally found my way back here... then I put Hinata to bed and cleaned the scrapes I got from before - that was pretty bad fall I guess. Then I must have joined Hinata on the bed because...because I was too tired to look for another place to sleep. I must have fallen asleep without realising it.

What to do now?

Suddenly Hinata whimpered in his sleep and gripped at Kageyama's arm so hard it almost hurt.

A nightmare? Kageyama tilted his head. I wonder what scares a ghoul enough for it to have nightmares...

He reached down and stroked Hinata's hair with his free hand. The frown that had creased Hinata's brow smoothed out into a content expression and the grip on his arm loosened.

Kageyama closed his eyes and leaned back his head, continuing to pet Hinata's head, and tried to sort out his emotions and thoughts.

Are you afraid? A little. But I love him still.

Why?

Because when I'm with him I don't feel alone anymore. He likes what I like. He's always there when I toss a ball. He trusts me whole heartedly. He makes me happy, almost as happy as when I play volleyball, but a different kind of happy.

But he's a monster. He's lied to you.

Of course he had to lie. He would be captured or dead if he did not lie. And where would I be? Unable to reached my full potential during volleyball. And alone. Besides, he said he loves me, right?

How do you know that is not a lie as well? He has deceived you this long hasn't he? What is another lie to him?

The thought made it hard to breath and his chest hurt.
