Chapter 17
<Jasper Coven>
I watch Callie walk into her house with a smile on her beautiful face; she started glowing even more than usual after I asked her to go to a movie with me this Saturday. I don't know what came over me, but after what happened at school today and holding her body close to mine, I knew that I liked her. I had known it subconsciously for weeks, but it wasn't until she began talking in my car today that I knew I had to tell her, whether she felt the same way or not.
When I'm with her, it feels like I'm a whole new person. I've never been treated by anyone the way Callie treats me. She looks at me differently and speaks to me unlike any other person I've ever encountered. When I first met her, I wanted to shut her out like the rest of the people in my life, but she didn't give up on me like everyone else. The more she talked to me, the more time I wanted to spend with her. I turn on the radio and watch the sun pass by; it reminds me of Callie.
I pull up in front of my house and stare at the dark windows. The shades are habitually drawn as if they can hide what's going on inside. I grab my bag from the floor of my truck and lock the doors on my way up the old wooden steps in front of my house. I hear some banging coming from inside and the smile is immediately wiped off my face as my instincts kick in. I throw open the door and drop my bag on the 'welcome' mat before running down the hallway to the living room.
It's all happening so fast. My dad has my mom in a chokehold; his eyes colored red by an alcohol-induced craze. She's slowly turning purple and tears are staining her already shallow cheeks. My dad releases her a little, but barely gives her time to breathe as he drives his fist into her stomach. I watch as she stumbles a few feet away from him, but he follows her, his hand grasping her arm tightly. I rush over to my mom, but before I reach her, I hear a sickening crack and she's on the ground. My father won't let her go as she begins falling towards the floor. She cries out as her already broken arm is being further damaged by him.
"Get the hell away from her; can't you see she's hurt?" I yell as I bend down to my mom, who's howling with pain.
He still doesn't let go, causing me to practically explode. I stand up and dig my nails into his wrist until he releases her. I force him back towards his chair and glare at him with disgust.
"Stay away from her or you'll have to deal with me." I mutter as I begin to walk back over to my mother's crumpled figure.
"She deserved it." He chuckles as if he doesn't care about what he just did.
I turn around and march right back over to him, my fist raised. It connects with his face and I watch as his nose begins to bleed. Suddenly, all of my anger pours out and I'm punching every inch of him that I can reach. His lip and left eye is swollen, he's heaving and bruises are appearing all over his body. I spot the almost full bottle of whiskey and pick it up, holding it right next to his head.
"Jasper, please don't do that; you could kill him." My mother pleads from her place on the floor.
"I don't see how that could be such an issue." I mutter through clenched teeth.
"Don't sink down to his level, baby, you're a better person."
Somedays, I wish I didn't have to be; somedays, I wish I could just make him go away...
I exhale deeply through my nose and throw the bottle into the fire place where it shatters. I watch as a haunting smile spreads across my father's face, his body sinking into his chair. It's almost saying 'I knew you couldn't do it'.
