“Angel, not that I doubt you or anything, but when you say ‘I have a plan’ and it involves Owen, I’m not going to let you jump in two feet first. I have to know what it is, and we should plan this out.”
“Let him in,” I repeated. “I have a few words I want to exchange with him.”
“That just makes it worse!” he complained. “Owen is not going to listen to us!”
“Won’t he?” I raised my eyebrows.
“No!”
“Seth, please, just trust me.”
“Any other time, yes. In a life or death situation? Absolutely not. I’ll take care of you this time, thank you.”
“If anything goes wrong, we can just stop the dream!”
“Stop the dream?” he repeated critically.
“Yeah! Just wake up!”
“You can’t do that, Eva.”
“Yes, you can! You just feel where your eyes are and open them! It’s easy! I’ve done it a million times before in nightmares!”
“No.”
“Please?”
“No.”
“Please?”
“No.”
“Seth Marshall Valdez, don’t you dare doubt me on this. I can wake up out of this dream whenever I want to! Do you understand me?!”
He looked shocked at my exasperation.
“I can wake up. There’s nothing to be worried about,” I said in a gentler tone.
He sighed. “Really…?”
I eagerly nodded my head. “Yes!”
“Okay. Just be really, really careful, Angel.”
I gave him a wide smile, leaning up and kissing his cheek to reassure him. “Always.”
Seth slowly sighed, relaxing whatever force had been keeping Owen out.
“Beautiful setup, lover boy,” his cold, hissing voice sneered sarcastically.
“Thank you, Owen," he responded cooly. His arm seemed to have a mind of its own as it wound around my waist and pulled me behind him.
His red eyes hardened, and his fists clenched, stretching his skin across his knuckles. “I knew it! I knew you were still scared of losing her you little-”
“Speaking of Noel!” I interrupted. Both of their heads whipped around to face me, Seth’s horrified and Owen’s challenging, daring me to say something bad about his soul mate.
“What?! What about Noel?!” he snarled. Seth became defensive, but I lightly brushed his arm, a silent command to calm down.
“She was really, really special, wasn’t she?”
“Yeah? You just getting this, human?”
“No, but I’m starting to question how special. How strong is that soul mate bond, again?”
“What are you trying to say, brat?” I didn’t even flinch away from his insulting stare.
“Well, if she really was as special as you say she was, then why are you still here?” I could see he was about to snap, so I quickly explained, the words coming out in a rush. “I mean, what’s so important about Seth and I? Why should a little human and some weak, fake, half-vampire” –I squeezed Seth’s hand, telling him that I didn’t mean that- “keep you from the one that you love most? It’s been, what? That ‘earthquake’ was in 1556? Almost 500 years? I would’ve just said screw it all and gone to be with her, by now. I mean, I see where you’re coming from a little bit, but is it really worth it? I just think Noel is more important than that.”
