Luke's pov

I was awakened- well, I wasn't doing much sleeping- by agitating clicking coming from my window that allowed moonlight to flood my small apartment room. My mom was asleep and most likely didn't hear the noises coming from the glass but it was aggravating me to such an extent that I raised my sleep-deprived head off of my pillow that was anything but comforting. Seeing as I've had the same pillow for about 6 years now, the cuddly object was merely a sack of air covered by a thin fabric.

I swung my limp legs over the side of my bed and huddled over to the window. My bones ached and my head was hung low as my body hadn't gotten sleep since I moved into the horrid building. I moved in last Friday and it's now 1:30 on a cold Tuesday morning. I could hardly raise my hand to unlatch the rusty window. I was only 16 and I had the current physique of a 90 year old man.

I finally unlatched the window and almost got hit in the eye with a small piece of shingle from a roof. I raised my head, afraid of being hit. A boy, looking to be around my age looked to me with a hazy smile, chin in the palm of his hand.

"Hi." The curly haired boy spoke.

He was sitting on the roof outside of his apartment window. Seeing as this was a crowded part of town, the homes and buildings were very close together. His roof and my roof were separated by only an inch of thin air.

"Why are you throwing rocks at my window? Its Midnight" I spoke in a clearly indignant voice.

The hazel-eyed boy smiled. "Couldn't sleep. Besides it isn't midnight, its 1:30-something in the morning" he spoke, not receiving my annoyed vibes.

"Well some people are trying to sleep" I argued. "Dude, my room is literally not even 6 feet away from yours. I can see that you haven't slept since you arrived"
He shot back smiling a bit.

"What? So now you're looking into your neighbors window? Creep much" I scoffed. "What ever" he presumed unfazed.

"Goodnight" I began to retire from my spot at the window. "No, wait." The boy stopped me "Come join me, since we both clearly can't sleep" he ushered me out.

I was hesitant to climb through the window, seeing as the ground was bottomless through my tired fuzzy vision. "Fine." I slid off of the window sill and onto the rough shingle covered ledge.

I examined the other boys roof overhang and saw that there were cups and water bottles sat on the window sill and books underneath a tarp he had hanging from the gutters. He had flashlights and a pillow settled against the dingy white shingles.

I settled in the center of the wide landing and the boy began to speak "Hi. My name is Ashton." He grinned

"Um. Hello, my name is Luke" I sent a weak smile back. "So Luke, why haven't you been able to sleep?" Ashton tilted his head to the side and rested it back into his palm. I thought upon the question for a moment. Should I really explain my life story to an annoying kid I met only- I don't know how long ago. "Well, Um-" I was cut off by a sound coming from my phone. It was a text from some kid from my old city, who I really couldn't care less about. I checked the time and it was 1:35 am. Only about 5 minutes or so and the boy was already at my wits end.
