Chapter 17 (REWRITE)

Henry retracted his hands from the side of her head as every emotion crashed into him. However, Rose didn't react, only staring down at the floor.

Gently he pulled Rose into a hug and she thankfully hugged back.

"I'm so sorry, Rose," he said softly. "I promise he won't be able to hurt you again." Henry tightened his grip on her, impossibly pulling her closer.

"Thank you." A tear rolled down her face. She felt safe in her arms.

Henry pulled away from her and wiped away the stray tear with his thumb. She tilted her face into his touch and he naturally cupped her face. They stared into each other's eyes and smiled.

Lisa looked at them. "I'll go and make dinner," she whispered.

Henry leaned his head down and rested it on Rose's shoulder. She did the same. Henry gently rocked back and forth and wrapped his arms around Rose's waist.

"Dinner is ready!" Lisa yelled from the kitchen.

Rose's head snapped off of his shoulder. Henry couldn't help but smile. They stood up and walked to the kitchen.

"I made grilled chicken and there's some soup for Rose." Lisa laid the food on the table.

"Thank you," Rose said.

"No problem, honey."

Rose sheepishly smiled as she began to eat.

They had all finished dinner and placed their dishes in the dishwasher. Lisa had gone to bed directly after dinner, leaving Rose and Henry in the kitchen.

"Can I go walk outside?" Rose asked.

Henry smiled and nodded. "Yes, I need to finish cleaning but I'll join you in a few."

Rose nodded and walked outside. The air was cool and blew against her skin, causing a small smile to grace her face. Different variations of orange and blue had filled the sky as the sun began to lower out of view. She was so happy, she failed to recognize the second car parked in the driveway.

Rider's head rose from his shaking hands as his tear-stained eyes looked to the house. Immediately he spotted Rose, who was beginning her walk. His hands clenched and his body began to shake.

His brother had chosen this Pet over him.

Before he could stop himself, his world went black.

Rose took a step forward before she frantically took three back. Rider was standing in front of her, his eyes the dark crimson that she knew too well. Somehow that switch had been flipped and that meant nothing good for her.

Before she could get farther away, the back of his hand collided with her face. She tumbled to the ground as a cry escaped her lips. Frantically clawing and kicking at the ground, she tried to stand, but her head was yanked back as her hair was pulled. Her body shot into Rider's. One arm wrapped around her torso, holding her arms in place and keeping her feet off the ground. His other hand slammed over Rose's mouth.

Suddenly, his fangs sunk into her neck. If it weren't for his hand over her mouth, an ear-piercing screamed would have echoed throughout the air. She struggled in his grasp but it was to no avail. Tears cascaded down her face and his hand in pain. This was ten times more painful than when Henry had bitten her, even when he had lost control. It felt like her arteries were being pulled out of her skin. All she wanted to do was scream, cry, call out for help, anything, but deep down she knew that wasn't going to happen.

She just wanted to see Henry one more time. . . . Henry. . . , Rose thought. Her eyes rolled into the back of her head and his body went limp in Rider's grasp. Despite this, it didn't stop him from continuing to drink her sweet blood. Despite the rareness not being his favorite flavor, it was good enough to continue.

His grip tightened around her pale frame.
