SET A FEW MONTHS AFTER CITY OF HEAVENLY FIRE:

The thought had been on Isabelle’s mind for some time now. After Alec had died, it was the final push she needed to commit to it. Her father had become the Inquisitor, her mom refused to return to the Institute due to the raw memories it sparked and the fact Isabelle had grown distant from the Shadowhunter World after all it took from her in the past year; all came into play when it came to making her decision. Then the process of watching Magnus mourn his lover was almost as painful as losing him. Jace and Clary could live and die together; time would not tear them apart unlike Isabelle and Simon. It was not fair in her eyes.

Before Alec’s passing, Simon and Isabelle had been focused on the good and not facing their condemned reality. However as long as Isabelle’s heart beat and he was immortal, they would be fated to be torn apart. Isabelle did not want Simon to have to mourn anyone; but it was too much ask for everyone important in his life to transform. He would have to watch his best friend die; he would have to lose his mother and sister just like his dad. He would feel the pain and curse of immortality that was a fact. But why should he go at it alone? Why should he mourn, feel and live alone when he could have the love of his life right beside him?

Isabelle knew the feeling of losing a sibling, in fact she lost two already. She knew the pain Simon would face when Rebecca passed, all too well. She was sure she could help him through the process.

Isabelle always assumed she would out live Jace, there was just something in him that was always drawn to death even when they were children. She was sure the war would take him away from her, when he lived every day after felt like a blessing. She was no longer scared of the thought of burying her last living brother.

Most Shadowhunters despised Downloaders. Isabelle actually preferred their company over other Shadowhunters. She had even dated quite a few. Maybe it was because they were forbidden fruit, maybe she liked sneaking around or maybe she was just drawn to them because she was destined to be one herself.

She knew Jace and Clary would never abandon her for any accord. She had all but formally resigned as a Shadowhunter, the Institute was now ran by strangers and anyone who meant anything to her that lived in Idris before  the attack had been slaughtered during the war. She did not feel like she was losing anything by turning, but gaining the chance to love and heal. The wounds Jonathan caused would take more than one lifetime to heal, she knew it but the thought of dying with that pain saddened her even more than the thought of watching Simon stage young as she slowly died. She wanted to feel happy again, safe again and time could give her that.

Jace, Magnus and Clary all accepted Isabelle’s decision. Magnus even supported it. Isabelle just had bring Simon into the loop. Truth be told, she was scared. Scared of what he might say and do. She knew he would not like the idea at first, she knew it may take years even decades for him to come to terms and accept it. But it would happen, she knew it. It was so clear he loved her for more than just her heartbeat, which means he could love her even after her heart stopped. But that did not mean he would take it lightly or even well.

“What about kids, Isabelle? You cannot tell me you don’t want children. You can’t have them if you’re a vampire!” Simon said frantic. They had been going at it for a twenty minutes now. At first he thought she was joking, then the look in her eye told him she was serious.

“It’s not like I was going to have kids anyways,” Isabelle took a deep breath; “I mean I feel in love with a vampire, for God’s sake.”

“You won’t be able curse like that anymore; you won't even able to say his name. How will you swear at Jace then?”

“I have a colorful vocabulary, I’m sure I can make do.” Isabelle laughed. Simon was clinging to anything at this point to discourage her.

Over the next weeks Isabelle had been persistently annoying; to the point she almost goaded Simon to giving in several times. Nevertheless, the thought of being the one to steal her heart beat devastated him. He just could not do it. He never wanted Isabelle to feel like he did or to be a monster like him. Simon could not bear the thought of the calamity her transformation would bring to her. He wanted more for her life than that. Then he realized, her transition would not be like his. She wanted this. He never had a choice. She had studied vampirism for years, he was still learning every day. She knew what she was getting into. Most importantly she would have him to help her for what her training had not prepared her for. If one thing was for sure about Isabelle is she never does something she does not want to just like she never says anything that she does not mean. He knew she would get her way with or without his support, she wanted this. It was not just about a sappy love story for her, she needed it. She wanted the time to heal and the strength to feel strong and whole again; getting to spend forever with Simon was an added plus. Simon knew had no choice but to support her.

Isabelle knew a vampire from her past that was willing to turn her so Simon would not have to feel any guilt or remorse for his involvement. She had planned so carefully. However, Simon could not imagine Isabelle spending her last breathing moments with anyone else. He also knew no one would be as gentle as he would. If she was going to go through with this, no matter his protests, he would be the one to turn her.

The moment had finally come, her lips were tinted a darker shade of red than normal from his blood. “Are you sure?” Simon said with guilt and nervousness. She simply nodded and gave him a small reassuring smile. He had to force his fangs to extend, unlike the last he feed from her. He hesitantly brushed a strand of hair away from her neck before sinking his fangs into the crook of her neck.  She let out a gasp and pulled him closer to her.

As her blood spilled into his mouth, he was filled with ecstasy. Her rings raked down Simon's back and soft moans escaped from her lips, it was obvious she enjoyed this moment as much as Simon did. No matter how much he ravished in the taste of her, he remained aware of her heart beat. He could hear the shift in the beat pattern, from fast to slow and heavy as she began breathing hard. This was it. With each breath of air she tried to intake, her heart beat slower and slower until there was no sign of life at all. His heart sunk with qualm feelings. She finally succumbed to the blood loss as her body fell limp in Simon’s arms.

Simon used his strength to dig her grave faster than he could ever have as a mundane. He took one last look at her body then began the process of burying her. Simon knew this process would not be pretty, but he was prepared to do whatever it took to make it as tranquil as possible for the love of his life. After all, this was the beginning of forever for them.
