Emery's POV :
He was looking at me.
I could feel his eyes on me as soon as I stepped out of my car. I looked up and locked eyes with him. My heart fluttered as I met his gaze. The same hazel brown eyes that I had became familiar with. The same eyes that I loved. The same eyes that I had missed. He looked handsome as ever and hadn't changed much besides growing a tad bit taller. There were a number of emotions running through his eyes.
All I wanted to do was run up to him and embrace him into a hug. But I knew I couldn't because he hurt me way too many times and I wasn't going to let him make me feel as vulnerable as I once was.
I could see him begin to walk towards me. I didn't know if I was able to talk to him again. So I stood there frozen, feet planted to the floor. And then all at once he was there right in front of me.
Same jet, black hair, same smooth, tan skin, and the same full, pink lips. Everything was perfect about him.
"Emery," he said softly as his eyes scanned my face looking for any sign of emotion. He bit his lip, which he had often done when he was nervous.
"Please at least talk to me." He begged. I sucked in a breath and looked down at the cement ground and then up at his face.
"Now is not the time, Grayson." I said in a cold voice and with those last words I was gone, already heading towards the entrance of the school. I already knew what I did was wrong. But I had to because I couldn't get close to him again.
I could feel the stares as soon as I walked in through the blue double doors. The soft whispers made its way towards my ears. I quickly headed towards my locker, grabbing my textbooks and then slamming the door shut. I began to make my way towards my first class until I heard an all too familiar voice making me stop in my tracks.
"Who said you were allowed to come back?" An annoyed voice said. I turned around and smirked as I saw Nicole stood in front of me with her hands on her hips.
"From what I recall you didn't make the rules around here and I thought you would at least greet me with some flowers and maybe a hug? After all we are best friends." I said placing a sickly sweet smile on my face.
She rolled her eyes and scoffed.
"We're not even close to friends." She said.
"Oh right, because best friends don't stab each other in the back." I said sweetly. She looked at me with an expression I couldn't recognize. She quickly covered it up and went back to her cold expression.
"Listen here Emery, Riverside High was just dandy without you popping out of nowhere. So if I were you I'd stay out of my way." Contented with what she said she walked away making sure to sway her hips causing me to gag.
I rolled my eyes and continued on to my first class which was AP Literature. I did actually care about my education because if I did well in school I could go to college, and then I could go as far away as I wanted from here.
I got to my class and quickly took my seat closer to the back of the room. I then pulled out my pencil case and notebook and placed my head on the desk. I had five minutes until class started so I might as well rest my eyes.
I heard a chair screech right next to me but then ignored it. I then felt a poke on my arm causing me to groan and look up.
Staring back at me were a pair of blue eyes. The boy had olive skin with light brown hair and looked quite familiar.
"You made quite the appearance this morning Emery," he spoke with humor laced through his voice. My eyes widened and a small small smile crept onto my face.
"Luke?"
"Yup that's me," he said. I quickly engulfed him into a hug.
"Well at least puberty hit one of us," I said chuckling. His cheeks quickly turned the shade of red. "Not that funny Emery," he said looking at me annoyed but still a bit of amusement in his eyes.
Luke was a pretty close friend with me before I had left California. We would usually study together because we were in the same Math class so we had gotten pretty close.
The only difference was that he used to be a scrawny little kid with big round glasses that I always made fun of whenever we had hung out. So the boy in front of me definitely had caught me by surprise.
"Anyways how has life been?" He asked looking at me with anticipation.
"It's been good." I stated simply causing him to roll his eyes.
"No juicy details? Anything?"
"Nope," I said, leaning back on my chair and putting my arms around my head to support my neck. He looked at me blankly and just stared at me. I began to chuckle knowing that he hadn't liked my answer to his question.
I huffed and said,"Europe was great. I made new friends and got to experience all sorts of food and people. I loved it, but just not as much to stay there forever since I'm back here in California." He gave me a nod and looked back to the front of the class.
The bell rung causing students to shuffle into the classroom as they chatted with their friends. Soon after, the teacher had arrived causing the students to settle down and lessen the chatter. He then began his lesson as I wrote down notes into my notebook.* * *
Thank the lord that it was finally lunch. I swear my stomach had grumbled like twenty times in Art class and I'm pretty sure everyone heard me. Some random kid thought I had farted or something causing me to slap him in the head.
Luke and I had met up before lunch and we were currently heading towards the lunch room.
"So where are we going to sit at lunch?" I asked as we continued down the hallway, dodging kids.
"The popular table, duh," he said simply as he pushed open the door for me leading into the lunchroom. My eyes widened as I looked at him. He just shrugged and started to stand in the lunch line causing me to follow after him.
"Wait, you sit in the popular table?" I asked as he had gotten a burger while I had settled for some pizza and a soda.
"Yes Emery, did you not hear me the first time?" He asked as he motioned his hands acting as if I was a toddler. I scoffed and continued,"Well the last time I checked Luke sat in the library during lunch."
We continued to pay as we picked up our trays and headed towards the so called "popular table".
"Well that was freshman Luke and Senior Luke now plays basketball and is very known around this school," he stated in a confident tone. I rolled my eyes and just followed him as he led me towards a table in the middle of the room.
As soon as we got to the table, Luke cleared his throat very loud causing the whole table to look at him.
"Everyone this is Emery, and she's going to be sitting with us," he announced loudly. The table was quiet for a while as they looked at me. All of a sudden their faces broke in to smiles as they greeted me. I smiled back at them and sat down next to Luke.
"Emery this is my girlfriend, Carmen."
I looked back to where Luke was sitting and there stood a gorgeous girl with long dirty blond hair. She quickly engulfed me into a hug and smiled at me.
"It's nice to meet you Emery," she said happily.
"It's nice to meet you too."
We soon sat next to each other and began to talk. In all I found out that Carmen was a really nice girl and she and Luke had been dating for almost six months and they were a really cute couple if I say so myself. We planned on hanging out soon and exchanged phone numbers before she excused herself to go to the bathroom.
I felt a a pair of eyes on me and turned towards the direction. Grayson was sitting there with confusion written on his face. His face was etched with a frown as he stared at me. I guess he sat in this table too. Nicole was sat next to him hanging on to his arm like her life depended on it.
I guess they were still together.
Why do I even care? I asked myself.
Maybe because your jealous? My conscious said.
I averted my eyes back to him. I knew he wanted to say something because his mouth bobbed open and closed for what seemed like forever. I quirked my eyebrow as I watched him.
I guess Nicole had noticed because she looked towards the direction he was looking and met eyes with me. She glared at me and narrowed her eyes. She then grabbed Grayson's face and smashed her lips on to his. He looked confused and kissed her back as he placed his hands on her waist. They finally let go causing me to look away. I could feel her smirk on me as I poked at my half eaten pizza.
I don't know why I'm mad or even jealous. I had no reason to be mad because they were dating and I wasn't even friends with Grayson anymore. I was angry at myself for feeling these things because in the end I knew I was going to get hurt.
I got up from my seat in the table and began to walk towards the exit of the door. I was hurt when I shouldn't even be feeling anything towards him. As I began to open the door all it once it seemed like the room had quieted down.
"Emery can we talk?"
I felt a warm hand softly grab my shoulder. I slowly turned around and met eyes with him. Grayson looked at me with hope filled in his eyes. Without knowing I nodded slowly and let him lead me outside of the school and towards a bench.
We sat there in silence for a while as I played with my hands.
"Why did you leave?" He asked in a small voice as he turned to me. What was I going to say?
"Because you broke my heart and dated my best friend leaving me hopeless and vulnerable"
"I don't know," I said in a small voice. He huffed and stood up standing in front of me. He kneeled down and placed his hand under my chin. My heartbeat began to quicken as his hand made contact with my skin.
"You and I both know that you do know why you left," he said in a soft tone. I looked away making his hand fall back to his lap. I heaved a sigh and met eyes with him for the fifth time today.
"I left because you broke my heart," I stated simply and got up from my seat on the bench. I headed back into the building leaving him sitting there helplessly.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
