WAKING UP TO HIS PHONE RINGING, Dylan groaned and rubbed his eyes before rolling onto his side to get it. Who could be calling so early in the morning? Checking the caller ID, he realized there was none. It was a new number.
Sitting on the side of her bed, Edenne bit her nails while she waiting for the call to go through, then rubbed her temple while biting her lip. This probably wasn't a good idea, but then again, any idea Adrienne suggested was never a good one. She shouldn't have gone through with it. Just as she was about to hang up, he answered.
"Hello? Who's this?" Dylan slurred into the phone, his lips barely moving. His voice was even deeper in the morning and honestly...it was hot.
"Yeah, hi hello. It's me." Edenne replied nervously, her voice shaking a little. She shuffled while sitting down, and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "It's Edenne."
"Oh," He cleared his throat and sat up straighter, running his fingers through his messy morning hair.
She choked on her spit. Shit, she probably called too early. Glancing at the clock, she muttered, "Sorry, did I wake you up? I can call another time-"
"No, it's fine. I'm supposed to get up at this time anyway. This will help wake me up." He interrupted. "But yeah, what's up? How'd you get my number?" He coughed.
"How'd you think? Adrienne has crazy ass ways of getting things. She got me a zip-lock bag with weed in it just two weeks ago and didn't tell me until last night. Anyway," She mumbled awkwardly. "We're sort of having another little get-together kind of thing in three days; Saturday. It's going to be at the old beach where Grandpa Jerry used to be at."
"Oh, the creepy white man that tanned until he turned orange?" Dylan chuckled heartily.
"Oh yeah, him. It was fake tan, by the way. You know Alyssa will flirt with anything that moves, talks, and has a dick. She went up to him and touched his shoulder and came flying back moments later. Guess what she was whining about? Spray-on tan that got onto her fingers."
"Gross, no way!" He burst with laughter. She could practically see his chest vibrating and shaking the bed.
"Oh hell yeah." She laughed as well. "Anyway, it's coming up and Alyssa's begging me to ask you because you don't seem to be replying to any of her text messages?"
"Oh. Oops, caught me." He chuckled deeply. "But so what? So does 90% of the population. Even Markus deletes her messages before he opens them so it won't say 'read'. You know what happens when you read them and don't reply."
Edenne grimaced, "Believe me, I'd know. She spams me with messages like 'Why aren't you replying?', 'You don't even care about me anymore!', 'I thought you were like my sister.' Blah."
Dylan grunted. "For sure. Anyway, tell her I'm just busy recently and couldn't reply or something. I'll make some excuse for her anyway."
"Alright then. I guess I'll see you at the party?" She asked hopefully.
"Yeah, definitely."
"See you."
"Bye."
Edenne ended the call and quickly texted the group chat she had with Adrienne and Sabia.
E: yoo he said yes.
In under three seconds, Adrienne started typing already. Edenne chuckled and fell back onto her pillows.
A: AY I KNEW IT ITS BC U ASKED
E: stFU no
A: yESSSSS I KNEW IT y'all gon ;0))0)))
E: ew adrienne wtf
E: Where's Sabia?
A: You know she never replies until centuries later. Let's just wait until she read all this.
Nodding, Edenne turned her phone off and walked over to her bookshelf, the one she hadn't touched in years. Brushing her fingers over the books, she felt dust fly off softly. She waved it away and a color of light blue-green caught her eye. Lifting it out of it's shelter, Edenne flipped the book open, smoothing out the pages with her fingertips. A small smile melted onto her face. It had been ages. Alas, everything seemed to be about him ever since he came back, but she couldn't get him out of her head. Dylan.
Dylan.
Dylan Volsky.
Closing the book, she whispered the title to herself. "Words I Never Said." There were poems in that small booklet. Poems she adored. Some of the pages were already falling out because it wasn't an actual book you bought at stores. He wrote poems for her about her and glued it all together into a paperback. Inside it, there were letters and envelopes. Every time she looked at it, she wouldn't be able to hold back a smile. She was about to close it, when something fell out. It glistened like gold on the light lavender-grey carpet. Edenne bent down to pick it up.
It was a charm. There was no necklace attached to it. She flipped back to the page it fell out of. Why hadn't she noticed it before? There was a small envelope pocket glued onto a page. She flipped it open and a note appeared.
Edenne opened it.
broken
this note opens
my heart opens
reaching
out further and
further i
try and
i almost fall back
and i see the color
blue and
i think of you once
more
i hope to god
there won't
be a day where
my heart will break
for that color
just like you
who might break my
heart
but alas
i think it'd be
an honor to have
my heart
broken
by
you
