Best Friends

It was the first day of our sophomore year at Jay High School. Me and my best friend Saphire were so excited for another year of seeing each other almost everyday! Not that we had not already been seeing each other everyday over the Summer. I of course started the year with jean shorts and a black tank top with the most amazing backpack. It was galaxy, but then again everything I owned was galaxy. Saphire on the other hand was the fashionista. She always had to be wearing her makeup and new outfits she got from the mall. She on the other hand had the same backpack and was wearing a nice shirt that had only one sleeve. Also she had shorts like me but they were basically sparkly form the top down.
She and I walk into the main lobby of the high school carrying our new supplies for our classes. Saphire and I always had the same locker next to each other every year so we stopped there to see what classes we had for the day.
" I have Physical Activities. What about you Saphire?" I asked looking up at her.
" Ugh, I have Chemistry first. Pray for me ok?" She said rolling her eye's at her schedule. She dropped her hand that had her paper in next to her leg and took a deep breath.
" Well at least we are not freshman and just starting to year off." She said with a smile.
" True that, though I doubt that I am going to get good grades this year." I said looking down at my locker combo and starting to punch in the numbers.
" What do you mean Skyla... You are better than I am in school." She to began to open her locker.
" Ya but I just don't know. I have never gotten good grades and you know as well as I do that my parents are more intense about this kind of thing than yours are." I put in my shelf for my locker and started to place my text books on the shelves, but I paused.
" Your right though. I might do better this year, but I don't really think that I will." I said closing my locker door. Saphire looked at me at smiled.
" Hey now stop your complaining. At leased you have a chance at not failing. I on the other hand have like no chance of that." We both laughed.
" Well I guess I will see you at the bleachers after class then?" I asked still chuckling slightly.
" Of course I will see you there Skyla. It is after all our tradition." She closed her locker door shut and then turned in the opposite direction as me. She waved and I waved back.
I walked to the girls locker room to get in my school gym close. I myself did lots of sports and played on a couple of our schools teams, so instead of regular PE I had practice. I had volleyball practice then so at least I didn't have to go outside for practice. I actually preferred being indoors because on that day there was a cold breeze that sent chills down my spin. After all Colorado is so unpredictable with it weather. I walked in the girls changing room and got dressed. I had to hurry though because I had realized on my way to the locker rooms that I was a few minutes late.
 I threw on my knee pads and pulled my shirt over my head. I then rushed out the door and in to the gym were my teacher was waiting.
" Let me guess, you and Saphire got in a deep conversation right?" My teacher said with a smile. She was most likely the coolest teacher in the whole school to be honest. She was understanding and she made everything fun, even laps and shuttle runs.
" Oh my how did you know?!" I gasped sarcastically. She began to laugh.
" I always know." She said chuckling. I laughed to and then walked over to my team. I was captain last year but as the new year started the team would have to vote again. I was on the varsity team so choosing a team certain was one of the most important things fro the whole of us. I mean just think about it, if you choose a bad leader then were will you get in life?
" So girls as we all know we have to choose a team captain today. The principle has informed me that due to the new schedules we will have to do tryouts this week for the new students."
" WHAT?!"
" No way."
" Why?" Everyone began to ask.
" I know, I know that is like no time at all to prepare for the tryouts but we have to make it work if we are going to add new people into the team." The teacher replied.
" But coach Tally how are we supposed to have time to think about who to be team captain?" Lilly asked. She was one of my teammates who had joined late last year so she didn't know about the whole voting thing yet.
" I know why don't we vote for Sky again. I mean last year we made it to the finals with her as my captain, maybe this year we could go for State Champs!" Carly said with confidence.
" I agree." Julia said.
" Me too!" Sara replied. Almost everyone voted for me to have a second term, but two of my team members did not. It was not because they did not like me or anything, but because they wanted a shot at captain too.
" Alright then girls... I give you captain Sky!" Coach Tally said. Now Coach Tally was a hug supporter of mine throughout my high schools years. And no, her really name is not Tally but that is the name we all gave her. She was called Tally because she would as we put it tally up the points in our activities and scrimmage games.
After all of the main celebration of choosing captain and playing a game of fishes we all went out for a water break. It was about nine o'clock in the morning when we went out for our drink. Yes finally I can see Saphire! I thought to myself. Everyday that I had a Physical class Saphire would " take a bathroom break" and come to see how the day was going. I walked over to the bathroom and waited for her to come. A few minutes later I saw her walking up to the bathrooms. When she finally was next to me she smiled and then started to jump up and down.
" Wow Girl!" I said putting my hands in front of me.
" What is wrong with you?" I asked. She stopped jumping and then took a deep breath.
" You know the guy that I REALLY like." She paused.
" Ya?" I crossed my arms.
" He JUST gave me his number so that we could hang out some time!" She finished and than began to squeak.
" Alright then. You my friend are crazy." I said chuckling.
" Hey now you know that one day you will find a guy that you will love and then live happily ever after with!" She said putting both of her hands on her face.
" No Saphire I will NEVER date again. Never in a million years." I said rolling my eye's.
" Ya sure but I will make sure it will happen." She said.
" Well you should be getting to class before the teacher realizes that you have been gone for a long time." I said.
" Well alright. I guess I will see you in an hour then?" Saphire asked.
" Ya that's right." I went to the fountain that was next to me and took a sip.
" Alright well see you later." She waved and then left to her class.
All my teammates were already back in the gym waiting for me, but they knew all about how Saphire and I had our little visits. They looked at me as I walked in and they laughed, but in a playful way.
" What?" I asked them.
" We all think it is funny how already on the first day back you and Saphire are back on your routine." Sara said and then continued to laugh.
" Ok, ok." I said laughing alone with them.
We practiced for the next hour or so and then went to clean up in the locker room. I got dressed back into my tank top and shorts, and then I took my ponytail out and brushed my hair. I liked to have my hair straight down for everything unless it got in my way like it did when I was playing sports. I finished up said goodbye to my friends and then headed to my locker.
When I got there I saw Saphire waiting for me. I walked over and opened my locker. She smiled at me and then waited for me to put all of my things in my locker.
" So um Skyla can I have someone sit with us at lunch today?" She asked, but it looked like she was going to start begging if I didn't say yes.
" Before I say anything, who is it?" I asked.
" Its Jacob." She blushed.
" I KNEW IT!" I yelled. I smiled at her.
" Yes it is fine. Though why are you asking me? It is up to you if you want to bring friends... Or future boyfriends." I laughed.
" Hey!" She scowled at me but I kept laughing. We headed to the lunchroom to get our lunches and then we were going to meat up with Jacob. We had the first lunch period at ten o'clock, so it was more like a brunch than a lunch. We walked over and got in the lunch line. Surprisingly we were some of the first people there so we got our lunches soon after getting in line. I got some cheese pizza with mac and cheese. Saphire got her usual and got pepperoni pizza with a water. We headed to the bleachers that were right outside the school by the football field. We sat at the top of the bleachers were we usually did and then waited for Jacob.
" So you told him were we would be right?" I asked taking a bit of my pizza.
" Yes I did. And he said he might be late because he had to go talk to a teacher first." She replied looking around.
" Ya know if he asks you out I am going to kill him, right." I teased.
" No you won't!" She yelled. I could see the blood rush to her cheeks.
" I if you ever go on a date I am going to follow you two everywhere, and take pictures." She threatened.
" Ya ya like you would stalk me on something that will NEVER happen." I said just the slightest bit annoyed.
" Hey look here he comes." Saphire waved at him and he waved back.
" Hi guys." He said walking up the steps of the bleachers.
" Hi Jacob." I said.
" H..hi Jacob glad you could make it." Saphire shuddered.
" So I brought my own lunch so don't puke if I have crappy food." He said opening a small brown lunch bag. He had some pretty tariffing stuff in there but I don't think it would have killed us or anything.
We ate and talked for a while after that. I think that he really did like Saphire witch made me happy. Though I just would want him to know that if he hurts her in any way I may or may not murder him be any means necessary. For now though everything was fine so I just enjoyed hanging out with Jacob and Saphire.
