As we walk in, the Dauntless stand up an begin to applaud. They shout and whistle and stomp. Valerie begins to smile and So do I.
As the applauding dies down Valerie grabs my arm and pulls me to some empty seats. In the center of the table is some food I've never seen before. It's two pieces of circular bread, with a circular... brown something stuck in between.
I look at them questionably.
While I'm staring at the food, Martin slides in next to me.
"It's beef," he says, he smiles and grabs one, than he pours some red sauce onto the 'beef' part. "Put some of this on it." Than hands me the red sauce before biting a gigantic bite out of the sandwich.
Valerie laughs as I pick one up, still not exactly sure what it is.
"Never had a hamburger before, Tobias?" She asks. I cringe at the name, Tobias is my name, but whenever I hear it, it reminds me of my father.
"That's what it's called," I say and pour some red sauce onto it, just like Martin, and take a bite. It's pretty good.
Suddenly a man walks into the dinning hall. His sharp eyes scan the hall, and his hard face is solum. His hair is grey, peppered with black hairs.
"Max, still have some black hairs left?" Martin yells at the man, he is rewarded with a few chuckles through the room, and Max's eyes shoot over to him. Than walks straight towards our table.
He sits down in front of us an I thinks he's going to yell at us, until he smiles.
"A stiff?" he asks, 'Stiff' is slang for Abnegation people, which, unfortunately, I am wearing the clothes they do and still look like one. "Good luck, you'll need it."
Thank you, for helping my confidence boost sky high.
"So, Max..." Martin starts.
"Yes, it's done," Max says, plainly.
"Great, thanks," Martin says than points at me, "That's Tobias," I see recognition flash across his face, than Martin points to Valerie, "And that's Valerie."
"Welcome to Dauntless," Max says, than begins to get up, "I have a few matters to attend to, excuse me."
With that, he leaves.
"So... Who is he?" Valerie asks.
"Max, he's a Dauntless leader." Martin answers.
"Oh."
We finish our meal then follow Martin as he calls to the other initiates to follow him.
He leads us to a room full with 10 beds. Five on each side with dressers in the middle.
"Why are there ten beds?" Eric asks, of coarse he would. "There's only nine of us."
"We expect more," Martin says.
"We started with twelve."
"We know less would make it."
Eric pales.
This is where you will be staying." Martin says. "Girls on the left, boys on the right, there are some Dauntless clothes in the dressers. You need to be at the training room at eight o'clock a.m, sharp. Breakfast begins at six thirty."
"What happens if you are late to training?" An Erudite girl asks.
"You will have a punishment." Martin says matter-of-factly. "Don't be late." And with that, he leaves.
I have never slept in the same room as a girl before, the girls grab some clothes and run off to the bathrooms and the guys change in the room, it is awkward for me to.
Soon everyone is settled into their own beds, and there are soft sobs every once and a while.
The sobs keep me up.
Everyone has to be at least a bit sad about leaving their families and their factions.
I was not.
I kept thinking of what would have happened if I had had a better family.
A father that did not beat me.
A mother that did not leave me.
Thinking of a better life, and blocking out the sobs, I fell asleep.
