Chapter 28- You Should Be Thanking Me
Jace's Point of View
“Jace…Jace…JACE!” I hear my lovely girlfriend calling my name a few days later on the day that just so happens to be my birthday.
I mumble an incoherent reply to Emma and then pull my covers up over my head, stuffing my face deep into my fluffy pillow. I’m not ready to wake up just right now because I was actually having a really, really nice dream. Or maybe it was just a repressed memory or something like that because I was a little kid in it and my parents were still together, so that’s how I know that it was a really long time ago. Assuming it was a repressed memory and not just a dream. I dunno, but it was a pretty cool dream anyway. That’s not the only reason that I’m not ready to wake up though, I actually am really tired. Yesterday was Wednesday, which obviously means that today is Thursday, and after school yesterday evening, Emma came home with me and we hung out and stuff, if you catch my drift.
She ended up staying over until around 11 p.m. last night and I told her that she was more than welcome to stay the night, but she declined, saying that she needed to make sure that everything for my birthday was perfect. What she even meant by that, I have no idea. I mean, I already told her like, five times that she didn’t have to get me anything for my birthday and I really did mean that. She’s my girlfriend, she gives me more than enough by just being with me. Emma’s just so ridiculously stubborn though so when I tried to explain that to her, she scoffed and told me that she was going to get me a present whether I wanted one or not. Like I said, she’s stubborn, so there’s no way I was gonna argue with that.
“Jace!” Emma exclaims, slapping my shoulder lightly. It doesn’t hurt though, obviously, because her hands are just so tiny and small and plus my covers are covering my entire body, so I guess that cushions it.
“Em,” I murmur from under the covers with an inaudible sigh. “I love you, I mean, I really, really do, but what is it?” I ask sleepily.
I wait for Emma’s answer to come as to why she’s so relentlessly trying to wake me up on my birthday, of all days, but she doesn’t say anything at all. Suddenly, she just bursts out laughing hysterically as if she’s just heard the funniest joke in the world or something. Emma giggles loudly for a good five minutes before she falls over on my bed, sprawling out across my leg, still laughing. Her laughing is just so contagious though that I can’t even stay mad at her for trying to wake me up so early. So, I throw back my covers and sit up slightly, looking down at her with a small chuckle as she’s just now recovering from her laughing fit.
“What’s so funny?” I ask her with a grin, my voice slight hoarse due to the fact that five minutes ago, I was dead to the world.
“You said it again,” Emma informs me with a small giggle as she sits up on my bed with a wide smile still etched on her face.
“What’d I say again?” I wonder, cocking an eyebrow and giving me adorably amazing girlfriend a confused expression.
“That word, you said it again,” Emma expounds with another small giggle. And she always says that I’m the goofy one.
“Oh,” I say, raising my eyebrows in understanding. “What, you mean, love?”
“Yes, that word,” Emma confirms with a smile as she leans over and presses her lips to my cheek. “I love you too.”
“Well, of course you do. I mean, why wouldn’t you?” I ask teasingly, grabbing my t-shirt from the floor and pulling it on.
“Hmm, maybe because you’re just so arrogant,” Emma retorts jokingly with an eye roll.
